Publisher's summary

With the same incomparable style and warm, inviting voice that have made her beloved by millions of people far and wide, New York Times bestselling author Fannie Flagg has written an enchanting Christmas story of faith and hope for all ages that is sure to become a classic. Deep in the southernmost part of Alabama, along the banks of a lazy winding river, lies the sleepy little community known as Lost River, a place that time itself seems to have forgotten. After a startling diagnosis from his doctor, Oswald T. Campbell leaves behind the cold and damp of the oncoming Chicago winter to spend what he believes will be his last Christmas in the warm and welcoming town of Lost River. There he meets the postman who delivers mail by boat, the store owner who nurses a broken heart, the ladies of the Mystic Order of the Royal Polka Dots Secret Society, who do clandestine good works. And he meets a little redbird named Jack, who is at the center of this tale of a magical Christmas when something so amazing happened that those who witnessed it have never forgotten it. Once you experience the wonder, you too will never forget A Redbird Christmas.

A sad bittersweet story

Any additional comments?

I really like the way Fannie Flagg turns a phrase. She is down to earth and tells it like it is with zero mincing around. She is what I would call wistfully funny, almost ploddingly so. Over all the story was a good one but be aware that it really isn't a Christmas story. Christmas is a small part of the book--but it really tracks the seasons in the life of a community of people in southern Alabama. Don't get this book thinking it will be a funny, warm, holiday season listen. It just isn't. In fact it was so sad and forlorn in spots that for some listeners it might add to seasonal depressed feelings. So--if you are prone to that experience put it aside and read it another time of year. The message is a good one, very life affirming while encompassing the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Quintessential Fannie Flagg.

A Red Bird Christmas is a Christmas tale for those who still have the spirit of wonder and awe. Even jaded demeanors will be softened by the experience of A Red Bird Christmas. When you listen to A Red Bird Christmas, expect a miracle because you get one -- a big one and several others for good measure.

The author reads the story in her own personal and intimate style. It is warm. It is homey. It is a story of miracles, love and redemption. The characters are real and special. They are people you know or wished you knew. It is story for the season. We all long, just a little, to be in Lost River.

After reading the story, Ms. Flagg talks about her own growing up, small towns and how she incorporates people she has known into her characters. This added a special insight into how Red Bird Christmas came about. I found it to be an edifying addition to the production.

This is an excellently produced audio book.

Has become a Tradition

This book has already become a Tradition for my family. My wife and I love all of Fannie Flagg's books and this is our favorite. While on a long trip to a dreaded encounter, this book removed us from unpleasant thoughts and put us in a very sentimental and giving state of mind. The story draws you in with suspense then leads you to hope. By the end, you feel like your heart has swollen three sizes larger (a la Grinch), while you realize that your worries are so minor compared to the plight of others. Fannie Flagg has hit a home run with this Christmas story, and even the toughest of us have to feel a heart tug at one point or another during this tale. If you have any compassion in you at all, you'll find yourself silently praying for a miracle and hope by the mid-point of the book. I recommend it to all during the Holiday Season. It is due to become a tradition to all that love a good story, Holiday or not.

A+++ to Fannie Flagg!!

I?ve been a fan of Fannie Flagg?s writing since Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Caf?. Fannie really knows how to pull you into the story immediately and keep you there. She makes you laugh, cry and leaves you longing for more!! It?s another down home southern family story with a Christmas twist that you will absolutely LOVE! Just one warning, once you finish listening you will feel like you left your family behind. It leaves you longing for more and wanting to move to Lost River!! It?s read by Fannie herself who does a wonderful job of bringing the story to life. This book is one you?ll never forget! Thanks Fannie!!

Easy, Fun, Magical Read

Fannie Flagg has a way with words that makes you feel as if you live within the lives of her characters. Though the book is somewhat predictable, it is truly an enjoyable listen. So, put away your big boy/girl attitudes and go with the magic of the story.

Getting into the Christmas spirit.

Cozy and warm. Just what you need as the weather grows colder. Warm hearts all around. The needy and the unwanted become needed and wanted -- by one another. I didn't want it to end.

Wonderful little story

While this book sounds as if it is a Christmas read, it really isn't. Flagg has written an easy to listen to story which will pull at your heart strings and leave you feeling better about the human race. I was captivated and recommend it for all ages.

Great book not just for christmas

This was a very nice christmas story that went beyond christmas, it was actually 2 christmas', and the year in between them.

Oswald T. Cambell so named for the can of Tomato soup that was in his basket at the orphanage he was left at has just received some bad news from his doctor who tells him to get out of Chicago and head south. He ends up in Lost River Alabama after his doctor gives him an outdated brochure for a health spa that turns out burned down over 20 years ago. But what he finds is a quaint little town with more women than men. the town is full of characters and grocery store owner with a pet redbird.

This was a fun little book I don't always enjoy christmas books that are too sweet & sappy this one had just the right amount of both along with a really good story, Fannie Flagg has written a heartwarming, humorous story that I would recommend to anyone, especially if you like southern fiction.

I re-read this for our RL bookclub and decided to try it on audio read by the author she did a great job at the narration there were only a couple times when the cadence fell a bit and she had to take a breath at an odd time. I did enjoy this one just as much the second time around this is such a delightful story that has become a christmas tradition for me to read.

Highly recommend
