What is it? It's first the story of two women in the 1980s: gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode tells her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women, of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend, Ruth, who, back in the 30s, ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama - a Southern kind of Café Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.

Excellent story
Heartwarming and uplifting. I especially r enjoyed the fact that Fannie Flagg can tell a story without filling it out with expletives. This is a well written story that left me feeling relaxed.

Heartwarming story
This is the first Fannie Flagg book I've ever read or listened to, and I was delightfully surprised. The author's delivery was perfect for the heartwarming story. A great listen!

Have you listened to any of Fannie Flagg’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, and when I started to listen to this one I thought her performance was really odd but it was absolutely perfect as I continued.

Sweet Story
Sweet uplifting story from one of my favorite story-tellers. It's always in a place you would want to visit (and maybe live). I thoroughly enjoyed this listen.

A pleasant experience
I so enjoy Fannie Flagg's writing. I tend listen to books as I commute. Her sweet stories make the time pass quickly. On to my next one!

Good story - a professional narrator would help
The story was sweet and fun, but the author's stilted narration detracted from it. A good, professional narrator would have brought it to life. I'm also not a fan of books that end with a "summary" of what happens to all the characters rather than using the plot to resolve loose ends. it's not a bad book, but this isn't an audio version I'll be recommending.
