Publisher's summary

Set in 1893 and seasoned with wholesome humor, A Proper Pursuit tells the uplifting story of 20-year old Violet Hayes and her search for her elusive mother and for true love.

Fresh from finishing school, Violet receives a double shock. Her dad announces his upcoming wedding and then confesses an old lie - her mom didn't really leave for a sanitarium 11 years ago. But why then did she leave?

Under cover of visiting the World's Fair, Violet travels to the stately Chicago home of her saintly grandmother and three eccentric great aunts. In her quest for her mother, Violet soon discovers much about faith, life, and love as she marches for women's rights, feeds slum dwellers, hob-knobs with the highfalutin, plays piano for evangelistic meetings, and ponders various marriage proposals.

Lynn Austin, multiple Christy Award-winning author of A Woman's Place, creates vivid historical settings with vibrant characters.

Absolutely worth it

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and all the historical background. My only qualm is that Silas featured entirely too little for my preference. I wanted more of Silas and Violet. And the humor... and the sisters and the beauty of their eccentricities were just perfect!

Fun, Funny and Sweet

Set in 1893, this is a humorous tale about a young naive woman searching for love like she has read in the dime novels of that period while also trying to learn the truth about why her mother left her at age 9. I found myself laughing out loud at times and at other times talking back to Violet about how naive she was! I didn't figure out the ending till close to it so it was fun trying to decipher which way each new beau of hers was going to appeal to her--or not. The cast of four very different sisters--her grandmother and aunts--was such a brilliant way to show the diverse directions of the culture and society of that era. Quite informative from "proper" society to Women's Suffragettes to missionary work to the sweet but amusing aunt who still believed the civil war was going on! I loved it. And of course, it had the "proper" ending!

Good Read

The reader is probably the best I've ever heard.

I struggled to get in to the story at first because the character of Violet was such a brat, but alas she won me over with her honesty with herself.

Wonderful book of self discovery.
