Publisher's summary

The rhythms of this novel are the rhythms of the land. A Place on Earth resonates with variations played on themes of change; looping transitions from war into peace, winter into spring, browning flood destruction into greening fields, absence into presence, lost into found.

Oh my, what a great book

Not since I first read Wallace Stegner have I so enjoyed a book. I have never read Wendell Berry and someone told me this one was good. It's a gem. It's beautifully written with the kind of warmth for the characters that is easily communicated to the reader. The stories are about simple, caring, deeply humane people. And the reader! He also has a warmth in his voice, combined with his exquisite southern accents that is sustained throughout the book. If ever there was a book to listen to, this one is it. I didn't want it to end.

Beautifully done, but sad

Thsi book was well written, for sure. I loved the characterization and there were places where I laughed out loud. The description of a simple farming town make it well worth reading. But there's no getting around the fact that it is grim, a tale of loss upon loss and how good people cope with those losses. For that reason, I could barely get through it.

The narrator is excellent.

a Lenten tale

After hearing of Wendell Berry, I chose this title. He portrays well the inevitable suffering and the indominible resilience of life. Appreciable perhaps mostly in the second half of life.

A wonderful, truthful, grounded world

Wendell Berry has an incredible knack for creating deep characters with many layers and much kindness, and places that feel true. Paul Michael provides a great many voices to tell those interwoven stories of a time and place connected to the earth, it's movements and seasons. It provided me peace and and an authentic connection to our world.

Human nature

Wendell's descriptions of people capture human nature beautifully. Thankful for every book he has written.

Another Port William "must read"

A great set of short stories in Port William. There are threads that run through the stories. Wonderful Berry at his best.

Great book and great reading.

This is the second Berry book narrated by Paul Michael and cannot now imagine another reader as perfectly suited to the author. And the book is powerful. Hard to leave Port William now.

Excellent on all levels. Classic Wendell Berry.

A great installation in the Port William series. As always, Berry blesses his readers with poignant insights into every aspect of life under the sun.

A wonderful meandering story

I loved this story as the author slowly makes his way through the different lives of the characters and, much like life, lets us know only a glimpse of what there is to be known about them. the narrator did a wonderful job throughout. There are also loads of wisdom to be had in the authors insight.
