Gina and Sally Makepiece have inherited a stall in the French House - an antiques centre nestled in the heart of the English countryside. Gina is determined to drag the French House and its grumpy owner into the 21st century.
Bearing all the attributes of a modern-day Mr Rochester, Matthew Ballinger is less than happy with the whirlwind that has arrived on his doorstep. The last thing either of them want is to fall in love. But will a trip to France change their minds?

"‘Immensely enjoyable…a very satisfying read.… It certainly won’t disappoint Katie Fforde fans in the least." (The Bookbag)
"A French Affair is the deliciously romantic new novel from Katie Fforde, one of our favourite authors here at Hot Brands Cool Places. Curl up in a comfy chair, settle in and enjoy this utterly charming escapist read. We loved it! Highly Recommended!" (Hot Brands Cool Places)

"Right book, wrong narrator"
I have enjoyed reading all of Katie Fforde's books, her characters are always down to earth and likeable. I didn't experience the same enjoyment with this book, and that had a lot to do with the narrator's sing song voice. It was just too jolly hockey sticks for me and was very grating at times. I have listened to other books with the same narrator, and haven't noticed this before. Like the first reviewer, I wish I had purchased the paperback version instead.
"Love in the Antiques Trade"
To be honest I don't think anything could, it would have to have been a different book with a different reader.
This story must be judged by its own genre, i.e. romance. it is not one I often read. Other writers sometimes put in this group such as Elizabeth Buchan write more complex, general fiction on relationships. I had fond memories of Katie Ffordes early books, which included more flawed human heroines, and more realistic situations, interpretations and decision making. I found this very formulaic and predictable. Though Katie Fforde writes with facility and includes some interesting information about antiques.
This is very much a matter of individual preference, but I found the narration irritatingly arch and hard to listen to.
Pleasant escapism if this is what you like.
"loved the book but the reader!!"
I enjoyed the book as I have all Katie Fforde's books but the readers voice grated on me especially when she attempted to do the different characters. It put me off listening to it and I bought the book!
"It does what it says on the tin"
The male lead character needs more life and energy. He is very two-dimensional and there is no real spark between him and the female protagonist. He is certainly not a 'hero' for the female reader to fall in love with.
The story was enjoyable enough, if a little unoriginal.
The narrator is too 'song-song.' Her over enthusiasm tends to lend a 'jolly-hockey-sticks' feel to the female characters and makes them sound too good to be true.
No. Katie Fforde's books are best read in isolation. They are all fairly similar and predictable but an enjoyable light-hearted read in their own right.
If you're a fan of Katie Fforde and are not expecting anything original or unpredictable, then this is an enjoyable enough read. Not one of her best though.
Katie Fforde hits the mark again.
Believable story line and lovely engaging characters.
Lovely to get the feeling of being transported between the UK and France.
Gives you a good sense of actually being present in situ in among all the Antiques and wanting to help raise cash to save the business so the ‘nasty woman’ doesn’t get her hands on it…
Most definitely 5 stars out of 5 stars.
"Quite a placide affair."
Not very exciting.
I couldn't see it ending any other way.
Usually I like Jilly's performance but the main male character came over as quite a boring guy.
Shame because I've enjoyed lots of Katie's books before, so will perhaps read them in future as this didn't really work for me.
This was a great story. Amusing and sad at times. Well research book and very well written with good descriptions. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, well written and spoken. If you like Katie Fforde this wont disappoint.
