Publisher's summary

A worldwide sensation with more than 12 million copies in print, Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series has produced #1 best-selling novels and earned a fiercely devoted fan base. Another spellbinding entry in the series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes continues the saga of 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century, time-traveling wife, Claire. The year is 1772, and the rift between Britain and its American colonies has put a frightening word into the minds of all concerned: revolution. In the backwoods of North Carolina, violence has already reared its ugly head, as cabins have been burned to the ground. To preserve the colony for King George III, the governor pleads with Jamie to bring the people together and restore peace. But Jamie has the privilege, although some might call it a burden, of knowing that war cannot be avoided. Claire has told him that the colonies will unite and rebel, and the result will be independence, with all British loyalists either dead or exiled. And there is an additional problem. Claire has discovered a newspaper clipping from 1776 that tells of Jamie’s death. With its epic scope, historical details, and sweeping romance, A Breath of Snow and Ashes is everything Gabaldon’s fans love and more.

18th century life

This gives a good glimpse into what life would have been like prior to the revolutionary war.

Amazing.

I didn’t love this book as much as I’ve loved some of the others, but I still loved it. Their world, the characters, the full immersion into their lives, is so all consuming and leaves me to grieve when the book is over. I shall miss them until I begin the next, but I do have to take a mourning period so that I can function in my world again. The love I have for the Outlander world is of the truest loves.

Elegant as always

Diana Gabaldon has done such a marvelous job with this entire series. It is captivating and intoxicating and crosses the bounds of space, time, and genre. This book elegantly deals with many facets of our protagonists' lives, the heartbreak, sorrow, love and abundance, and looks deep into the characters minds to give us a more complete look at how their lives, and past traumas have shaped them. 5 stars, but if I could give it 10, I would. Davina Porter has such a soothing oration, and captures the personalities of the characters magnificently. I highly recommend this entire series.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes

I’ve really enjoyed this series. The narrator really keeps your attention. I’ve read other books but they didn’t keep my interest as this does.

It's about time!

A great read to be sure! I read this when it was first released. And I was so disappointed when I found it was not offered as unabridged. Davina Porter's voice has certainly become Clair's so no other will suffice. When I saw that it is now available it took me about 5 seconds to click the download button. It's so easy to slip back to the 17th century when listening.

A long read, but worth it

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I loved having this unabridged version on audio, narration was great.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

some parts were tedious to listen to, so maybe I would have stuck closer to the plot

Have you listened to any of Davina Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

this compares very well to her other performances

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

choices and challenges

Any additional comments?

I love historical fiction, and having lived in Fayetteville NC for a time, I remembered some of the places mentioned in the book, especially the slave auction post that is still standing in the old downtown, as a reminder of that horrible part of US history. Once again, Diana Gabaldon hooked me till the end, I have just ordered book number 7.

A nightmare to find which segment is next

Would you try another book from Diana Gabaldon and/or Davina Porter?

I love the Outlander series. I have the books as well as the audible.
Davina Porter is enchanting to listen to - she brings everything to life as if you were watching the movie. Not all of the readers I've listened to are so talented.
The book came in 7 unlabeled parts and trying to find which segment is next was extremely frustrating. Every segment lists the chapters as starting with Chapter 1, and the verbal introduction of each book segment doesn't always give any indication of which chapter is being read.
Sure hope Audible does something about this.
