Publisher's summary

Samuel Branch is a man capable of wielding the energy around him to devastating effect. In another time, he would have been revered and feared as a wizard. In an age of technological miracles, the world has no need of his services. When a dangerous messenger arrives with orders from the ancient and unimaginably powerful Lords and the Ladies, though, Samuel Branch has no choice but follow the trail of a rising darkness. To complicate matters, when the sister of a friend-turned-enemy goes missing, an old lover resurfaces demanding that he intervene. When it all comes down, Samuel Branch may find that a rising darkness is the least of his problems.

Urban Magical Fantasy

I enjoyed this modern day magical thriller it has wizardry, demons and good narration. The characters of Sam, Jean, Matt, Father Bradley and Glynn were fun as they have different supernatural powers and help save Sam on couple occasions. It does have action, some horrific. Recommend if you like modern day fantasy. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you

A good light listen

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review so that others may have a clear idea on what to expect. These are my honest opinions. I have read hundreds of books in my time and this one was interesting but seemed to lack the substance that lets you become truly immersed in the story. You start out by the main character getting unexpected powers but he doesn't need to learn how to use them....He just knows. The main character read like some amazing person who knows everything and nothing like a real person at all. Then the main characters love interest was a pain and I would have rathered her not be there at all. The author did try to give her a bit of a backstory but she was just plain annoying. These issues coupled with the fact that the book read as if it were the 3rd in a trilogy rather than the 1st of a series (I'm assuming due to the cover saying book 1) makes it a good time passer but not one I would go back to re-read. Either way I did enjoy this book and do not believe my timewas wasted.

Okay urban fantasy (18+)

I'm an avid and looooong time reader of SF & fantasy. Urban fantasy is a relatively new genre for me as a reader, if you're not counting LitRPG stories. This novel is a nice introduction to the genre, with a wizard in a 21st century setting as the main character.
As for the story, the characters are likeable enough, but there's no suspense worth mentioning. The wizard acquires new powers along the way, which is fine, but what remains a mystery is how he immediately knows not only how to use them, but to get the absolute most out of them. He is such an adept that even the divine powers that be are surprised at some of the things he does, for they did not know it was possible.

I don't find those kinds of things believable at all. The main character should have experienced some kind of serious personal struggle, a steep learning curve, some odds working against him. But everything he does succeeds, nothing to stay up for, unfortunately.

A note for parents: this story contains an explicit sex scene, do not let your young children listen to this book.

In conclusion, I really like the story's concepts and premises, but the storytelling needs some work, imho.
I find it an okay story, and following Audible's star rating system that brings me to 2 stars ("okay").

I'm grateful this book was given to me for free at my request, and I provided this review voluntarily.
