Publisher's summary

Winner of 2021 Voice Arts Award, Audiobook Narration — Science Fiction

Narrated by award-winning actor Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast, FX’s Legion) Ever Winter is a vivid and eloquent story of loss, rehabilitation, and revenge set in a post-apocalyptic ice world.

Far from the savage remnants of humanity, Henry and his family have managed to survive the grip of desolate, perpetual winter on a vast tundra that was once an ocean teeming with life. When the family is discovered, their peaceful existence is shattered and their lives changed forever.

Henry’s siblings are kidnapped, leaving him alone in the ruins of their home. Broken, altered, and tormented by all that has befallen him, he is driven to wreak vengeance upon those who assume him dead...by any means necessary.

Fans of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road or Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven will enjoy the raw, emotional pull of debut author Peter Hackshaw’s writing.

The beginning confusion at Henry's stupidity

well done.. character formatting excellent.. telling two stories at one good but not easily tied together at end.. if this is.. was a series I'm all in...

So, is there going to be a sequel?

Was the story always realistic? No, but then it was futuristic and entertaining, demonstrated the resilience of kids in particular, mankind in general. The pace was pretty good, the writing pretty good. One of the better books I've listened to recently. (Which reminds me, don't waste your time with "The Darkest Winter" by Lindsey Pogue. Atrocious writing, IMO.)
Anyway, I heard good things about Ever Winter, and I was not disappointed in it at all. Except the ending left it open to a sequel--and I do get tired of books that aren't complete unto themselves.

Violent, Gory. Excellent.

I devoured this one quickly. Not your typical apocalyptic thriller, thank goodness. Well done. Thoroughly enjoyed and worth a credit.

Great characters brought to life

Other reviewers have mentioned Dan Stevens’ performance and I agree - superlative. The story’s icy world comes alive too and the action produced goose bumps on my skin that weren’t cold related. Great tension built for the final act. Don’t want to talk too much about the plot points and spoil others’ discovery because that’s part of this book’s joy too. highly recommended.

The best ever!

I’ve read a lot of post apocalyptic books, some good, some not so good, but this one was so well written and so full of feeling, true feeling, that I felt like I was part of the story. Thanks for such a great book and story!!!

Original and multi dimensional

I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to the frozen world of Henry and his family. It was a story of survival, redemption and fortitude placed on the backdrop of a harsh frozen environment. There was a lot of action and tragedy mingled with the occasional levity (IT by Stephen King was a bit of a life manual for Henry) that kept the story laced with hope. Definitely recommend.

Fantastically presented!

I can only think that the narrator did his job so well as my reason for the high rating. Best ever winter novel.

Amazing story, engaging performance!

The author he has a very good command of the English language and managed to create an engaging world with its own unique slang.. He also created engaging characters, maintained a constant mystery and despite using a traditional structure for the story, made an a enjoying page turner. By day one I had already finished half of the book and then I slowed down a bit in order to savor it for a while longer. There are only two points in the entire narrative that the most cynical of us would have ended the story right there and then, but this would have made it a different story altogether.

The performance was top notch!

Well done guys, it's a great book!
