Publisher's summary
In the tradition of The Vagina Monologues and PostSecret, this provocative collection takes a peek behind bedroom doors - satisfying our insatiable desires to look into the private lives of ordinary people
Arianne Cohen spent four years collecting 1,500 Sex Diaries and in this book she takes us on a tantalizing tour of American bedrooms through the all-new, provocative, often moving, sometimes shocking, always entertaining real diaries of 40 Sex Diarists. From the Madly-in-Love 17-Year-Old Who Might be Pregnant to the Cheating Father of Three and the Grandma Who Is Perfectly Happy Alone, these tales of love, lust, longing and leaving will shock, titillate, and educate. Cohen serves as tour guide, drawing on her deep database of Sex Diaries for her incisive and illuminating commentary.
Cohen was the first editor of the Sex Diaries column, a popular feature in New York magazine, editing it from 2007 to 2010. Her work regularly appears in Marie Claire and The New York Times and she is a contributing editor at Woman's Day. She is executive producing a TV reality series based on this book.
- Presents a groundbreaking portrait of relationships in America - including myriad options beyond single, dating, and married
- Includes Sex Diaries of straight, gay, bi, single, married, young, and older Sex Diarists, published here for the first time
- Gives listeners tips on how to evaluate their own relationships and sex lives
Sex is everywhere in our culture - yet how people best connect and disconnect is largely a mystery. The Sex Diaries Project turns the lights on to reveal the secrets that lie behind closed bedroom doors.

Here's an eye-opening examination of the "hookup" culture, seen through the experiences of high-school- and college-age women who confront the hard lessons of dating, love, and sex. Stepp follows three groups of young women and comes away with some disturbing insights. Relationships and romance are seen as messy and time-consuming, and love is postponed or, worse, seen as impossible. Many young women can't handle this, and they're being battered physically and emotionally by the new dating landscape.

It's hard enough to be an adult. You have to dress yourself and pay bills and remember to buy birthday gifts. You have to drive and get annual physicals and tip for good service. Some adults take on the added burden of caring for a tiny human being with no language skills or bladder control.

Unexpected delight
Any additional comments?
I was in the mood for something sexy, perhaps a bit titillating, too. After I listened to the sample I was enticed to hear more. What a nice surprise!
The readers are terrific. The personalities of the diarists come off as authentic and honest. And even while I suppose that some of this is exaggerated, I found the diarists to express familiar desires, passions, insecurities and vulnerabilities. Many of the writers describe how their relationships work or don't in relation to sex. The context for their sexual lives is rich. I feel like I can understand some of the kinds of relationships and what drives them very well, even though I've never experienced these types of relationships myself
Also, what's great about this collection is the range of people writing across the spectrum of age and sexual preference. Ultimately, this audio book reminded me of what a gift it is to be alive and to be hungry!
Enjoy!

Haaaated It!
What disappointed you about The Sex Diaries Project?
Cohen has managed to take an enticing subject and turn it into a borefest. She spends so much time doing overkill on the narration explaining the motives behind each diarist like it's a %$#@!&* Mutual of Omaha Wildlife Special. Also, the voices of the diarists were just awful. Awful, I tell you.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Extreme disappointment- I tried to give it time, hoping that the narration would finally let up so that the diarists could just tell their stories, but nooooooo. I white-knuckled it for an hour before I ripped the headphones off my head, logged in and hit the "return it" button on the Audible website. No lie.
Any additional comments?
Nope. I think I made my point.
