Publisher's summary

Healing Sex is the encouraging, sex-positive guide for all women survivors of sexual assault - heterosexual, bisexual, lesbian, coupled, and single - who want to delight in their own sexuality. While most books on the topic broach sexuality to reassure women that it's all right to say "no" to unwanted sex, Healing Sex encourages women to learn how to say "yes" - to their own desires and on their own terms.

  • New! Somatics and Healing Trauma: A new introduction explores developments in the field of trauma and the role of the body as an essential place of change, learning, and transformation.
  • New! An updated bibliography and resource section.

great for survivers who has already done alot of

What made the experience of listening to Healing Sex: A Mind-Body Approach to Healing Sexual Trauma the most enjoyable?

She dears to think courageously and hopefully

What did you like best about this story?

That she acknowledges abuse is done by all sorts of people male female, adults and children.
She second part on triggers is very good. As is the discussion of different sexual practices can have on survivors.

For example:
" Tantra practitioners also speak of the g-spot as an aria that holds sexual trauma. Many survivors have told me that working with the g-spot has been central in healing and releasing past sexual trauma. Some survivors report intense vulnerability, tears or rage when having their g-spot stimulated.

' I feel so vulnerable and opened up, I did not know she was stimulating my g-spot. I was not familiar with that at the time. It really sent me up to an other level, out their. Afterward I cried and shook and felt cleansed some how.'
Akaya"

Now where else have I found such accurate reflections on sex as a survivor.

Wonderful!!

I’ve had so much counseling regarding abuse from childhood but this book took me down a road that church and other books have failed. I reclaimed my sexuality for me. I feel free on a whole new level. I feel like I’ve finally found myself and I’m so excited to live life with authenticity for the first time. Ever. Thank you to the author of this book. It was truly a Godsend.

important and useful

I'm not a survivor of childhood abuse, but of an adult abusive relationship. My girlfriend recommended I read this, and I'm glad I did. It's sex positive, queer positive, and affirming. The voice of the narrator felt a little new-agey, but wasn't off putting. I appreciated the chapters about working through triggers and dissociating the most.

Incredible Information

Would you consider the audio edition of Healing Sex: A Mind-Body Approach to Healing Sexual Trauma to be better than the print version?

In some ways it is better in audio because you can hear the words of others traumatized and it makes it more real and understandable that you are not alone. It is healthy to hear the variety of sexual words said out loud to remove some of the "taboo" from them.In other ways, I'd like the book. I'd like the list of references and I'd like to have the chapter guides to use as a check off sheet to provide structure and steps to move through trauma.I intend to buy the book too. It is an incredible resource.

What did you like best about this story?

Reality about norms, normalicy of sex and sexual terms and behaviors.

Which scene was your favorite?

NA

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definately not. This is a lot of information to take it.

Any additional comments?

If you have had sexual trauma, believed that sex is dirty or wrong, digest this book!

Important topic

Where does Healing Sex: A Mind-Body Approach to Healing Sexual Trauma rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's unfortunate this book needs to be written - it's too bad 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will be sexually abused. But since we haven't figured out a way to break the cycle of abuse and stop the abusers from violating those younger and more vulnerable, we can all read books like this and heal from the abuse that is passed down with each generation.

This book offers critical information on healing and sex ed, but I found the way it was recorded to be very confusing. The book is edited so that the narrator reads in a rapid, seamless fashion; she shares info from the author, and then without pause launches into a personal account from someone interviewed. This breathless approach left me constantly confused, recalibrating and shaking my head. I kept getting wrong ideas and messed up context. Maybe this is an example of a book that doesn't translate well to audio, or perhaps they could have set it up differently.

Must - listen for anyone who wants to dig deep to heal

I’m blown away by the support this book gave me as I am learning to become sexually healthy. I felt like I’m not alone because of the commentary of others that I relate to in the book. I felt validated, guided through the process, and everytime I had doubts, the book addressed my exact doubt. This book digs deep into understanding why you process things in a certain way and gently guides you how to support yourself through change in a healthy way. It encourages growth in a gentle, supportive way, and guides you through exactly how. I wasn’t abused till I was 18, but this book is definitely the key to my healing. I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about sexual healing. I encourage you to see the book through to the end as well. The later chapters continue to be healing & supportive throughout and you’ll be glad you listed to the end. I’m listening to it a 2nd time!
