Publisher's summary

In this excerpt from In Bed with Susie Bright, Susie interviews Yale psychologist Paul Bloom about his fascinating best-selling book How Pleasure Works: The New Science of Why We Like What We Like. Paul and Susie talk about the pleasures of sex and how we perceive them.

How Pleasure Works draws on insights from child development, philosophy, neuroscience, and behavioral economics, to show how certain universal habits of the human mind explain what we like and why we like it. Bloom covers everything from the animal instincts of sex and food to the uniquely human taste for art, music, and stories.

Called “the widest read, most reviled and revered sex expert in America” by The San Jose Mercury News, Susie Bright is one of the best-known sex writers in the United States. Susie has teamed up with Audible to bring you her weekly show, In Bed with Susie Bright, available only at Audible.com®.

Sound check, 1-2-3.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I enjoyed the concept of the interview, and the few times when the interviewer allowed the author to give examples from the book. There were also a few times when the interviewer set up a scenario to illustrate a point from the author's book.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Susie Bright?

Susie was a lively and well-informed interviewer, though I would have preferred fewer curse words. I'm not usually so conservative, but I was unprepared for such coarse treatment of the subject of pleasure (I know, I know, of course sex will be discussed.... but the details are still burning my brain!)

Any additional comments?

For an Audible production, I was shocked at the low sound quality. Susie's voice came across clearly, but as soon as the author was introduced, I had to constantly adjust the volume to hear him - and then lower it again when Susie spoke. Also, there was a constant hum, perhaps due to the two people being in different places (I assume it was a phone interview, so speakerphone? Yeah, not helpful for an audiobook...)

Pleasurable!

This is an interview so it's not like listening to someone read, rather you're hearing a conversation between two people who are interested in and knowledgeable on the subject. The thirty-some minutes flew by while listening.

Interviewer dropped the score

It's a very interesting topic. I just wish Paul Bloom has had a chance to speak more. Easily a 5-star topic with a more reserved interviewer. I'm sure his book is fascinating.

good discussion, bad sound production

the audio could have been better. not very crisp and sounds like it was recorded on tape with the hiss and buzz in the background. sound not as loud as other podcasts.

Interesting topic, frantic interviewer

I found Susie Bright’s interjections to be off topic and at some points cringey but Paul Bloom was great. Audio quality wasn’t very good though.

Overall good interview, could have used more depth

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Well this was an interview with the author of a book/about the book, as for myself since I know nothing about this author, or book I would recommend to those WHO DO NOT have the knowledge about this. To those who are familiar, I think skipping this would be fine, I though the interview could have offered more depth myself.

If you’ve listened to books by Paul Bloom before, how does this one compare?

No I have not, but I would.

What about Susie Bright’s performance did you like?

I didn't. She came off over zealous, to flirty and almost dumb.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I don't know. I want to read the book

Trash

I was expecting neuro-biology. I couldn't listen more than ten minutes - the interviewer's lack of taste, gutter vocabulary and general vacancy of any redeeming grace were more than I could stand. One star is too high.
