Story
George Bird Evans is a man to whom upland shooting has been a way of life for 50 years, and his book is both a creed for shooters and a fascinating sharing of the experiences of a true specialist. It is not a book for meat hunters (although possession of the game means as much to the author as to the next man), rather it is a book, half "how-to," half anecdotal and philosophical, that reveals in rich and intimate detail the unity that makes upland shooting that triad of bird-dog-gun in which no part is complete without the others.

Lazy days spent in the uplands inevitably bring a closer connection with nature. Especially when your sport is seeking that game little bird, the woodcock. For the woodcock reassures us that the brooks are still dancing merrily through the woods and are on their way to sweet-scented meadows. So it is, the woodcock brings joy to the lovers of forest, cover, and stream.

Story
On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused. Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day.

But Heavey knew next to nothing about gardening or foraging, and he lives in northern Virginia, close to Washington, D.C. The rural wilds, this was not. Is it any surprise that his tasty triumphs were equaled by his hilarious misadventures?

Publisher's summary
For a traveling bird hunter, October is heaven on Earth. It's Randy's favorite month. He is a storyteller, dog trainer, wingshooter, and wandering bird dog man. Every fall, he turns his truck north and west to match wits with grouse, pheasant, quail, and Chukar. He takes us through the years and the dogs. He tells the stories of coveys flushing, roosters cackling, quail running, shotguns, family, and even one unlucky yard chicken. He will take you west to Montana and Arizona, north to Michigan and Wisconsin, and south to Georgia. You will feel the wind, hear the exploding flush, smell the prairie, see the sunset, and taste sweet victory in the win. Puppies grow up, and old dogs die, but the yearning and restlessness never leave until that glorious month of October.

Many poker players can make good decisions at the table with a reasonable frequency. Nevertheless, there are numerous situations where even very experienced players behave in predictable ways. These deeply-ingrained habits lead them to make mistakes. The problem is that these situations won't often arise at the table by chance - you have to make them happen. Exploitative Play in Live Poker is a ground-breaking work that teaches you how to create the circumstances where your opponents will be likely to blunder and how to exploit them when they do.

Good overall, narator struggles.
Good stories if youre into upland game and the dog bred to hunt it. Confusingly, the author/narator struggles to read/relay his own words. For a good percentage of the book there is no proper emphasis on words and he sounds like he just saying words on a page.
Still have some really high points making it worth the $5 and the read. Beau sounded like a hell of a dog. Best quail tales I have found to date.

Awesome book
Really enjoyed these outdoors, bird hunting, and gun dog stories. They make me want to take my Brittany pup out to the field more frequently! Bought a hard copy to give to my dad - I’m sure he’ll thoroughly enjoy the stories as well!

Inspiring
The short stories are wonderful, captivating, and informative. Made me want to take such trips. Most of all, the author’s love and respect for his dogs come through in a beautiful way. I highly recommend this book.
