Publisher's summary

In this unique combination of African American music and cultural history, we come to know one of the greatest stars the world has ever seen - Eartha Kitt - as revealed by the person who knew her best, her daughter.

Eartha, who was a mix of Black, Cherokee, and White, identified as Black, but Kitt, her biological daughter by a White man, is blonde and pale. This is the story of a little White girl raised by her natural mother, who was the biggest Black celebrity in the world. For three decades before Kitt married, they traveled the world together, mother and daughter.

Eartha came from a hard background (she was born on a cotton plantation) and did not have her own familial ties to lean on - she and Kitt were each other’s whole world.

Eartha’s legacy is still felt today: We still listen to “Santa Baby” every Christmas, she starred as Helen of Troy opposite Orson Welles in Dr. Faustus, and she stole the show as Yzma in The Emperor's New Groove. Lupita Nyong'o was recently asked to name the two people she admired most. She chose Eartha Kitt and Katherine Hepburn.

In this audiobook, Eartha Kitt comes to life so vividly you’ll feel as if you'd met her. Filled with love and poignant laughter, Eartha & Kitt captures the passion and energy of two remarkable women.

A wonderful tribute to a remarkable entertainer

The first time I met Kitt she was escorting her mother through a throng of fans and autograph seekers. At the time I thought, I wonder if that young lady even knows Eartha and her fabulous story. (I didn’t know Kitt was her daughter at the time.)

Kitt knows her mother better than anyone…. The triumphs, the success, and the fears and hurt that lived inside that tiny powerhouse of a woman. If you loved Eartha and her work, this is a must read / must listen story.

Highly recommended.

Fear of Abandonment Drives A Great Talent

I have to admit my bias - no actress was a better 'cat woman' and no other singer should ever have been allowed to record 'Santa Baby'. This is a great behind the scenes look at a life that didn't start out looking like it would go anywhere. Eartha Kitt overcame a lack of education and shyness to become an entertainer and civil rights activist. Her daughter tells the good and the bad in a way that lets you feel Eartha's life for youself.

I love this story. Eartha Kitt was so much more than I knew. She was so amazing to endure all that life threw at her and still come out on top.

What a lovely story

It is lovely t hear about Eartha and her relationship with Kitt and the world. Eartha made her life what she wanted and imparted that on her daughter. Narration was good.

Substance, love, and devotion

I had always admired Miss Ertha Kitt for her talent, but had no idea what she went through in her life time. Hearing everything thing first and from the author Kitt was amazing. Their bond, and adventures through life sounded like they had a great life together filled with substance. I admire Miss Eartha Kitt even more for her strength snd values, and what she tried to do for others. This book is a great read. Although you may not think my writing in the review is!

Excellent!!

I loved this book!! I was able to connect with it in so many ways. I was raised by my grandparents who came up during the same era. Eartha Kitt was among the many great entertainers my family admired. Your relationship and caregiving is what I connected with most as our experiences were similar. Your description of her dying days, the laughter, the phrases, the bathtub oh so familiar. Your mother is surely proud! Thank you for sharing this story with the world! The narration was perfect! Bravo!

Nkredible Love Story❤️

Loved the Life and Love Ms. Kitt had for the phenomenal Eartha Kitt. The narrator was Wonderful. The most memorable was every part of this story. I grew up in the South and it's pain and cruelty that builds one character. God knows it take the strong and Ms. Eartha was the strong! Being apart of mixed race grandparents, here the stories and catch the pain of our ancestors in South Carolina people. I also loved the Ms. Kitt did grow to understand her purpose for being in this amazing journey with her mother -EARTHA MAE! Thanks for sharing
