Publisher's summary

Detective John Stark approaches the PI team of Griff Cole and Britt Callahan with a postcard he’s sure is from his estranged daughter, Kira. She’s been listed as a runaway for three years by Portland, Maine Police but John isn’t convinced that her continued absence is by choice.

As Stark’s long-time friends, Cole and Callahan, agree to look into the postcard marked only with the letters OK. The postmark leads them to Oracles of the Kingdom, a farm where women sell fresh produce in return for a fresh start with God. But nothing seems right about the town or the farm and Britt goes undercover to look for Kira. Once inside, she realizes that Oracles of the Kingdom is not the refuge it appears.

Suspenseful, exciting

The story itself is very interesting.
I wasn't able to finish the audiobook due to the narrator but I picked it up at the library and it's a great read.
The narrator needs to stop narrating, listen to some books, then listen to herself narrate and ask herself why she's using a robotic, wooden odd voice. Think about how other narrators read, very natural. The only ones I usually can't get through are the guys who went straight from radio voiceovers to books and bring that oddly exhausting energy to eight hours of narration.

I looked at so many of your book reviews - you get the same feedback over and over. please take it to heart and adjust your reading style

Interesting

This is not the normal kind of book I would read/ hear. But I will say I was highly captivated by the story. The narrator took a minute to get used to, but after the first few minutes I was immersed.

Expendables

I was given this title for free for an unbiased and honest review.

A harrowing story of human trafficking and sex trade. As we have so many things to worry about today in society, this book seems like it could have been ripped from the headlines. Young girls taken from the street and promised a better life only to find things are not as they seem. Be aware that there is a lot of sex and violence in this story but it is well handled and opens eyes to what is going on behind closed doors today. The story was well paced and kept the listener involved and needing to know what happened next. A small note, as I listen to a lot of audiobooks, the quality of the recording was not as good as I would have liked and as kind of fuzzy. Overall, I enjoyed the story and would listen to more of Hale's books.

A little heartbreaking.

I like this series very much. This book made my heart hurt for all the girls in this situation. Ms. Hale shone a very bright light on a very dark subject and did it very well.

Loved!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was an amazing story! I did not realize that it was book 2 in a series until about halfway through. It is a good thing that you did not need to experience book 1 because I would have been totally lost. This is a story about human trafficking and there are a few sensitive scenes in the book. If you are easily triggered, do not get this book.

I loved the characters. Britt is so relatable to me. The way she sees herself and feels she needs to prove herself to the world and herself is like looking in the mirror. I felt for her.

The narrator was really good but I had to speed up to about 1.4x speed to get a more "normal' pace.

Another Good Cole and Callahan Story

This is another great addition to the Cole and Callahan series. Here we find our protagonists in another situation in a locale that I am familiar with, which lends excitability for me. Character development continues to unfold and the story unfurls to get juicier and juicier. I am a huge fan of this series and will be reading the following books that will come out!

Very suspenseful

This is a very suspenseful thriller, but I don't feel that I got to know the characters very well. And Britt, in particular, has a couple of personality traits that make her hard to like. According to the closing credits, this is the second book in the series, so perhaps I might have gotten to know the characters better if I'd read the first book in the series ahead of this one. I hope to remedy that.

Kathleen Miranti's narration is quite satisfactory. Her character voices aren't particularly distinctive and she doesn't do accents, but I can't recall any instance where I couldn't follow dialog.

Suspenseful Thriller

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I could not stop listening to this book. I had to know what was happening to Britt. I did not love the narrator though more my preference than anything. I could follow the story just fine. The story was intense and graphic at times. It broke my heart. I would definitely read more by this author.

Gritty but good story!

Fair warning of triggers: sex trafficking and abuse. P.I. Britt Callahan has gone undercover to search for a missing teen…daughter of a Portland PD detective. Britt gets more than she bargained for when, what she thought was a cult turned out to be so much more. Will she survive to bring a sex trafficking ring to justice and rescue a young girl?
Gritty story but holds you captive. Looking forward to the next book.
