Storms Beneath the Skin: Slam Poetry | [Regie Gibson]

Storms Beneath the Skin: Slam Poetry

National Poetry Slam champ and subject of the loosely autobiographical film Love Jones, Gibson's Storms Beneath the Skin is a musical homage to his heros, written and read with soul, erotic reveries, and cosmic sensibility. Gibson's stage presence is akin to Mick Jagger's; he is easily one of the best slam poets to ever take the stage. This collection includes two versions of his famous poem "Jimi Christ".

Audible Editor Reviews

Slam poetry is primarily a spoken art, which is why listeners must absorb a vocal performance in order to experience the full effect of the words. In Storms Beneath the Skin, Regie Gibson, winner of the 1998 National Slam Competition and inspiration for the movie Love Jones, performs his poems in front of a live audience. His joyful, funny, and energetic delivery is clearly bolstered by the enthusiastic responses of the crowd. A listener can hear how the blues, jazz, and Jimi Hendrix have all influenced the award-winning performer, not only through the melodious nature of Gibson’s slam poetry itself, but also through the strength of several musical accompaniments.
