I'm a high school teacher and bought this to sue with my class. I don't find the commentary distracting but helpful. My students quickly figured out that when a particular voice was talking that was explanation. Also, there is a version of the play without any commentary in the file as well.
I work. I ski. I play. I write. I have a family. I garden. I coach. I volunteer. I sketch. I run. I read.
The narration and explanations are helpful. I have always struggled through Shakespearean plays.
This production also comes with a performance that is uninterrupted. Start on Chapter 6 of the audio book for it.
This is a really great audio program. Very high quality sound, narration is very useful and I came away with more knowledge of Shakespeare's history, the circumstances behind writing the play, and an understanding of what the classical language is trying to say. Highly recommended if you are at all interested in Shakespeare.
I bought this novel for my daughters Year 11 study, l cannot say how helpful this was, it made Macbeth interesting and exciting. She was one of the top students in Macbeth studies because of this audio novel where normally she struggles with English. Just Excellent also with the background on why this story was written, it made all the difference.
Eureka, after 25 years i decided to re-read Macbeth, my confused understanding of the play was transformed into an understanding i will never forget. The narration was exquisit i have finally conquored MacBeth.
This format with the introduction and historical context was a great refresher before I went to see a performance in a local theater. The very thorough historical information and then actual play with seamless notes which was pleasant to listen and covered all of the archaic language references so any stumbling blocks to understanding were clarified and made listening to the play itself much more fufiling experience. Looking forward to listening to King Lear and other plays by the same publisher
I am a live storyteller who devours huge amounts of audio books to study classics and new books so I can tell new stories.
The three words I would use to sun up Macbeth is groundbreaking, breathtaking, and dramatic.
Macbeth has influenced much of popular culture from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, House of Cards, Breaking Bad, and other books, movies, and TV shows because it delved into the dark side in a way that has not been equaled since.
I love Joan Walker guiding the commentary. She was passionate and knowledgeable. She helped make the story clear to me.
The Weird Sisters frightened me. Every time they appeared on stage, I cringed. They are duplicitous, but, truth be told, Macbeth did himself in with his own greed and ambition.
Macbeth is my first SmartPass audio play. I listened to it a week after I saw the play and I wish I had listened to it a week before I saw the play, because so much went over my head given the density of Shakespeare's language and the English accents of the actors. I will now listen to all available SmartPass audio plays before I see the real ones.
This is an excellent rendition of Shakespeare's Macbeth. I listened to a short section of the first part -- with all of the explanations -- but soon decided I just wanted to hear the play without interruptions. It is nice to have both, nonetheless.
The commentary is excellent, but if you desire no commentary there is an unabridged and uncommentaried version at the end of the audiobook. I can't recommend Shakespeare Appreciated enough.
My daughter was taking a literature class and was required to read Macbeth. I had not read since high school ( many moons ago!) The is awesome. If you are needing to "understand" what is going on.... listen to this.
I have never read the play.
The additional notes and comments really helped me to understand the difficult language. The fact that you can then listen without these, after gaining a better understanding adds to the experience
