Publisher's Summary

This collection features three modern classics of drama:

Six Degrees of Separation
In a Fifth Avenue apartment high above Central Park, a weathy art dealer and his wife are trying to interest a moneyed friend in a $2 million investment when an unexpected young guest arrives - and changes their lives forever. Veering effortlessly from hilarity to pathos, this dazzling play was lauded by The New York Times as "transcendent, magical, and a masterwork." Performed by a full cast starring Alan Alda, Swoosie Kurtz, and Chuma Hunter-Gault.

Agnes of God
In this contemporary murder mystery, set within the confines of a convent, Agnes is a devout, innocent young nun accused of infanticide. As a psychiatrist - herself a lapsed Catholic - and the Mother Superior struggle over Agnes' fate, the play plunges deeply into the mystery of faith and the consequence of truth.

True West
Pulitzer Prize-winner Sam Shepard's classic comedy is a story of estranged brothers Austin and Lee. Shepard compares and contrasts the reality of the two brothers by forcing them to come to terms with each other, with themselves, and with family.

    "Fantastic series"

This was my first listen to the LA Theatre Works series, and I was pretty reluctant to use up two of my precious subscriber credits on one download. However, it was completely worth it, and I plan to download more in the series.

I usually listen to novels, and this was a completely different experience -- much more like the actual theater than an audiobook. I was really surprised by how engrossed I was in these performances. Although a certificable audiobook addict, I usually listen to audio books while doing another activity. These, however, would have been enough to keep me completely occupied in their own right.

Wonderful experience, wonderful performances, and one of the few downloads I fully intend to listen to again and again. Bravo!

"Just like being at the theatre!"

Although the cast of "Agnes" is not as strong as the casts of "Six Degrees" and "True West" this is none-the-less an excellent purchase. This production of "Six Degrees" is especially well done. Alan Alda and Swoosie Kurtz are such a treat. All three plays are engaging and thought-provoking. I was hesitant to spend two credits on a single purchase, but it was worth it.

"Not my favorite plays, but great nevertheless"

This did not turn out to be my favorite of the LA Theater works compilations, but it was still very good. I have seen and was not a big fan of Six Degrees or Agnes of God and was not familiar with True West, but I got the recording anyway because I had liked the others LA Theatre works recordings so much. I found the performances in Six Degrees a little weak and campy, while the performances in Agnes and True West were great. I ended up really liking True West and being mildly interested in the other two plays. True West has interesting dynamic characters with humor and intensity. Really nicely written. In both Six Degrees and Agnes, I was never really convinced of the reality of the characters (this is due to the writing not the direction or performances) so those two plays don’t quite give me what I want out of theater. Nevertheless, like pizza and sex, just about any theater is better than no theater! I have become a (somewhat surprised) enthusiast of theater on Audible. I only wish there were more compilations (instead of the many single plays which are not worth a full credit).

"The Pulitzer plays collections are better"

I'm a huge fan of LA Theatreworks productions. I've you've just stumbled across them, consider yourself lucky: you've discovered one of the true gems of audible. I can't recommend them highly enough. Their acting and production values are stellar. They're incredibly powerful, emotional works. If you can, enjoy them as real quality listening, setting aside some time or perhaps on a long drive instead of on the way to work or on a treadmill or something.

That being said, the two Pulitzer collections are better than this one, which is still good, so start with those.
