Barefoot in the Park Performance

Barefoot in the Park

A brand new lawyer and his young bride have returned from their honeymoon and are moving into their new high-rent apartment. In order to reach this "charming" dwelling, they must first climb six creaking flights of stairs. Once there, they find the place is absolutely bare of furniture, the paint job is all wrong, the skylight leaks, there is room for only one twin bed, and the wacky neighbors pop up at the worst times.

"As much fun as the movie"

This was as much fun as the movie. My favorite version was always Richard Thomas and Bess Armstrong on stage, but this rivals even that.

    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed listening to this performance. The characters are quirky and the performance factor with sound effects and awesome acting made this performance a step above.

    "Classic Neil Simon"

Likeable characters are portrayed with humour and skill by the actors in this production.
I particularly liked the character of Cora Bratter's mother.

    "Cute, dated rom-com play"

This dated Neil Simon romantic comedy play felt a bit dated. Written in the early 60's, it feels a bit sexist, but I did enjoy it as a cute period piece. Good reading made it a fun listen. It made for a very pleasant 2 hour car ride. You get the traditional gender stereotypes clashing in the two newlyweds. If you can get by that, you might enjoy this light weight fun piece. I did.

I can find a book to love in any genre -- a beautifully written classic, an interesting mystery or sci-fi, a trashy romance. Bring it!

    "Short, cute comedy. Great performance."

STORY (comedy) - I didn't see the movie, but I know it was a big hit for Neil Simon. It's the story of newlyweds (Paul and Cory, his dingy wife) who are faced with multiple shortcomings in their first apartment as well as visits from zany neighbors and the mother-in-law. Things get so crazy that they actually consider divorce after only six days of marriage!

PERFORMANCE - I suppose this is the recording of a live play, as it has multiple voices and live applause. Excellent portrayals of crazy characters in crazier situations.

OVERALL - Recommended for anyone looking for a short, light break between longer books. I don't think it's worth the normal price and definitely not worth a credit, but it's worth a shot if you can catch it on the Daily Deal like I did. No cursing or sex, though there are some mildly suggestive conversations.

This was thoroughly enjoyable and far too short. The cast was fantastic and perfect for this Neil Simon's timeless story.

    "Perfect time killer."

Lightweight comedy for sure, but great acting makes it a fun and easy listen.
Just the right length for a long commute. A fun and easy listen.
Just remember, it was written in the early 60's. If you didn't know then Corie/Laura Linney's answer, when asked what she does for a living should give you a clue. ;)

"Too be young and silly again."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

So it isn't as good as actually seeing the play in person but it is better than just reading the script.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Corrie. To live life with passion and feeling. Don't we all wish we had the courage to? If her character works the play works.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely, It is a play and can be easily listened too in one go. More importantly it can be listened to again and again whenever the days are short and the snow is coming into you life through the skylight. It will melt away the blues.

"Corie's performance knocked a few stars off"

I loved the movie and I was looking forward to the play but I thought Laura Linney's performance wasn't up to par. She is flat (where happy is expected) to startlingly vicious during the fight scenes with her husband.
In the interview with the director which is directly after the play, he makes a point of mentioning more than once that Corie's character is supposed to be very strong. Strong is one thing, bipolar is another. Maybe my opinion is colored by Fonda's performance but I felt that Linney's over the top anger during those scenes made her unsympathetic and I found myself hoping the story would end with Paul marrying someone else and Corie on meds or in an anger management class.
