Publisher's summary

In the newest installment of the USA Today bestselling Heirs of Chicagoland series, vampire Elisa Sullivan unearths an ancient grudge, with potentially devastating consequences.

As the only vampire ever born, and the daughter of two very powerful Chicago vampires, Elisa Sullivan knew her life was going to be . . . unusual. But she wanted to make her own way in the world, preferably away from her famous family. Then supernatural politics—and perhaps a bit of destiny—intervened, and Elisa had to steady her nerves and sharpen her steel to fight for the city of Chicago. Luckily, Connor Keene, son of the North American Central Pack's Apex wolf, is right by her side.

When Elisa and her Ombudsman colleagues agree to escort a vulnerable supernatural to Chicago, they inadvertently set in motion a scheme of long-awaited magical vengeance. The city may pay an arcane price it can't afford unless Elisa and her allies rise to the challenge.

Contains mature themes.

Nice distraction from everyday life.

Plenty of action in this edition of the series. A new enemy emerges with chaos in their wake. The team once again rallies while trying to save Chicago and family and friends. Plenty of action with a side of romance. The narrator did a great job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene.

my favourite in the series so far!

Elisa and co. are back, in search of a demon who has transported Cadogan house~ along with everyone’s parents and the vampires who live within~ to some unknown location, in order to bring them all back home.
this one gave me the feels! and i loved every minute of it, especially the ending! dang!!

4.5 Stars 🌟

The funny thing is that even though this is the 4th book in this "new series" that it has taken that long for the series to settle in. Because it is set in a world that has already been established, with characters that we have already come to know and to love - you would think that it was a slam dunk. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Yes. I ADORE Ethan and Merit. But, that was because I fell in love with them on their VERY LONG journey as life threw them every thing possible and they just had to deal with it or die. Seriously.

This new series had some good and some bad. It assumed that we were automatically going to LOVE their daughter Elisa - as well as Connor (who was the Prince of the werewolf pack -different story) well, just because. And for the most part, I did. They did earn that much.

So, the first couple of books felt a bit off. Maybe it was because it was assumed (see above paragraph) that I would just fall in love with these characters because of who they were, I'm actually not sure. I will say that as this new book series went forward, we started to see the correct development of characters and began to get to know them and like them. By the time we get to this book - I felt like FINALLY I KNEW these characters and had progressed to the point that I was just not "told" who they were but could understand why I should like them.

So, this book is the continuation of a story arc that while not being the "main" story arc of previous books, it was in the background of the events that were going on. I also have to say that this story was "okay" until about the 50% of the book.

What I mean by that was that I could take it or leave it....in other words, I was not hooked. But, once I crossed that threshold, man oh man did things start to take off. The action ramped up and the drama was non-stop. You could have not stopped me from moving forward with this book.

One of my frustrations so far with this series has been the reluctance from our female MC to let her parents know about her relationship with "Monster". In this book, there really isn't the opportunity to have this discussion, but it made me wonder what difference it might have made if this was a "known" fact. There are several "secrets" that come to light in this book so it was always in the back of my mind that it might have impacted other events.

Regardless of any of these comments - Elisa, Connor, Lulu and the rest of the supernatural community are in for a HUGE dilemma with the events that occur. It takes the newer generation guts to step up and try to deal with the situation. I will say that this book FINALLY gave me the ability to relate to this new and younger generation and to start rooting for them. Was everything solved? No - not in the least. But, it was the first step in what is going to be a long journey.

It also set the stage for the MAJOR drama still yet to come.

I enjoyed the heck out of this book and am looking forward to the next book. There is still a lot to understand and a heck of a lot to figure out.

I. Can. Not. Wait :)

This was another great work by Chloe Neill. If full of action, suspense, mystery and a touch of romance. I give it 5 stars.
