Ich weiß nicht mehr, wann oder wo ich mit jenem prächtigen Menschen bekannt wurde, dem Brevet Brigadier-General John A. B. C. Smith. Nur soweit entsinne ich mich, irgendjemand stellte mich dem Herrn bei einer öffentlichen Versammlung vor, die wohl aus einem bedeutsamen Anlass auf einem Platz abgehalten wurde, dessen Name mir leider entfallen ist. In Wahrheit strebte ich für meinen Teil diese Vorstellung mit einer gewissen nervösen Verlegenheit an, und die erstickte denn auch andre Eindrücke wie die von Zeit und Ort. Ich bin von Veranlagung nervös - dies ist nun einmal ein Familienerbstück, das auf mir lastet, und ich kann weiter nichts dafür. Insonderheit kann mich ein leiser Hauch des Geheimnisvollen schon in einen beklagenswerten Zustand hochgradiger seelischer Erregung versetzen.
