Publisher's summary

Winter, 1362

After decades of successful campaigning in France, Thomas Blackstone, once a common archer, has risen to become Edward III's Master of War.

But the title is as much a curse as a blessing. Success has brought few rewards: his family—bar his son Henry—is dead, slaughtered; his enemies only multiply. Death, in so many guises, beckons.

As he battles to enforce his King's claim to French territory, Blackstone will assault an impregnable fortress, he'll become embroiled in a feud between French aristocrats, he'll be forced into pitched battle in the dead of winter . . . and he'll be asked to pay an impossible price to protect something much more precious to the King than mere land.

All the while, out of the east, a group of trained killers, burning with vengeance, draw ever closer.

Another Winner

Gilman writes very engaging historical fiction, built upon diligent research to create a narrative immersion into real events and personalities which have shaped the world we live in. These books are not only a pleasure to read and listen to, but they also inspire interest in further study of the eras which provide the settings for his books. Since starting this series I have purchased no fewer than ten books on the history of medieval England, France, and wider Europe, including books Gilman acknowledges in the historical notes at the end of each book (unfortunately Audible does not provide recordings of the historical notes, except in the cases of Book Two and one other book. They really should include them because they are incredibly important, fascinating, and entertaining.

Action with color, craft and suspense

I loved the book. Narration was excellent. The story was more suspenseful than expected. And the writing and drama well crafted.

Best Series Ever

Keeps you at the edge of your seat. Fully flushed out autonomous characters. No standard tropes, this book is engaging and realistic. No a paper doll version rehashing same old style. Highly recommend. Never listened to a series like this before.

Once again, an excellent book and reading of it

I am really enjoying this series of books. David Gilman tells a great story keeping on the edge of your seat at times. Gildart Jackson is a wonderful narrator giving each character a unique voice, making it seem like there are different people narrating the book.
