Publisher's summary

God Is Disappointed in You is for people who would like to read the Bible...if it would just cut to the chase. Stripped of its arcane language and interminable passages, every book of the Bible is condensed down to its core message, in no more than a few pages each.

Written by Mark Russell with cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler, God Is Disappointed in You is a frequently hilarious, often shocking, but always accurate retelling of the Bible, including the parts selectively left out by Sunday School teachers and church sermons.

Irreverent yet faithful, this book is a must-listen for anyone who wants to see past the fog of religious agendas and cultural debates to discover what the Bible really says.

James Urbaniak Brings This Book To Life!

Reading/Listening to this book requires a good sense of humor. But having said that...you will love the way that James Urbaniak moves through Russell's writings. It is flawless, memorable and extremely funny.

Hope to see both the author and the narrator to do more!

Deeply entertaining

This book is as honest as it is irreverent. Do read this for a fun summary of the entire bible. Don't read it for theological nuance.

Great performance by the narrator. He consistently matched the tone of each chapter.

Also, don't skip the pdf downloads with the cartoons. They're fun too.

Entertaining even without cartoons

I really enjoyed the modern lens which placed the books in context so they were more understandable. Like, “this one was written while under cave arrest”. I loved that! He skated over the bo-ring lineages in the Bible, describing it as God scrapbooking! So apt! Fantastic narrator. Thoroughly entertaining. The only other bible study type book I’ve learned as much from was The Harlot by the Side of the Road, which wasn’t the least bit funny. This one is a hoot. I made my mother read it.

The Bible in Brief

As a professor of Biblical Studies (yes I know the initials of that are BS), I thoroughly enjoyed this. I probably can't share it with my students (NSFS Not Safe For Seminary) but I loved it. It has inspired me in an odd sort of way.

thought provokingly funny

simplicity and the audacity of the truth in modern translation. i chuckled, i pondered and saw the Bible as a story of mans ongoing conversation, who am i, what am i and is it all worth and egoism. very funny

Not disappointed in this book!

While I found this book to be highly irreverent I also found it to be highly funny! It is well written and equally well narrated. It covers books from both the old and New Testament and quite ably if I'm allowed to say so.

I have a few quibbles with some of the stories and a bit of the language used to describe the overall themes of the books. As a minister I found a few inconsistencies with the biblical record in the storytelling but it is mostly accurate with only a few mistakes here and there. Since this is written as a satirical view of the Scriptures is not necessary for her to have an esoteric accuracy.

I recommend this book to those Who are interested in the Bible and are able to laugh at themselves and the foibles of ancient believers as well as modern Christians.
