Publisher's summary

God Is Disappointed in You is for people who would like to read the Bible...if it would just cut to the chase. Stripped of its arcane language and interminable passages, every book of the Bible is condensed down to its core message, in no more than a few pages each.

Written by Mark Russell with cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler, God Is Disappointed in You is a frequently hilarious, often shocking, but always accurate retelling of the Bible, including the parts selectively left out by Sunday School teachers and church sermons.

Irreverent yet faithful, this book is a must-listen for anyone who wants to see past the fog of religious agendas and cultural debates to discover what the Bible really says.

Great tool for helping understand the Bible

This made the bible approachable to the point where you could say something to a teenager and they would understand what you're about rather than just confusing Bible jargon

Amusing and confusing

After listening to the author’s rendition of the OT I’m left with a very different image of God than what I heard in the four NT gospels. This has been a huge enigma for me that this book does well to bring to the foreground. Jesus in his own words says that if you have seen him you have seen the Father. Well, the God portrayed in the OT is nothing like Jesus so where is the disconnect? What if Jesus was more like Moses or David? He would have raised an army and kicked some ass but no. Jesus shared the Fathers love by helping and loving people wherever he found them. He also confronted the religious abusers who represented the OT God. All this led to being hunted down and crucified. Seems like He could have easily avoided this end but he chose not to. Thank you Mark and Shannon for your work. I would like to hear the author’s commentary on this question. Anyway, when I imagine what the OT God would have been like if he came to earth as a human, Jesus was the surprise that I wouldn’t have expected but seems just right. James did an amazing job as narrator.

I have now read(heard) the Bible.

Reading from The Beginning, pun intended, I was never able to make it much further than Genesis. Thanks to the authors, and a great performance from the narrator, I was able to finish the Bible in less than six hours. I will be revisiting this one. The trip was enjoyable since the fluff had been meticulously wrung out and replaced with equal parts sarcasm and accuracy. If a reading of the Bible doesn't contain the phrase "tip slip", it's just not worth my time.

Laugh out Loud funny

This was my first audio book purchase and it was definitely worth it. I found myself laughing continuously on my long drives to office.

It might offend some people though. But, one has to love a culture that accommodates such a sense of humor. This kind of work is not conceivable in my neck of the woods.

Light hearted look at the bible

Easy to listen to. Great compact version of the bible. Makes you understand many of the passages better. Some crude language and taking the lords name in vain but seems to be an honest modern interpretation of what's written.

I love everything about this book.

I listened to this in one sitting and will definitely be returning to it for a re-listen. The humor is spread out enough that when it hits, it hits hard. The "dumbing down" of the explanations are really fun, I'd recommend this to three types of people; Atheists, Agnostics, and people who can take a joke.

Very informative, yet surprisingly neutral

The author stated in his introduction that he was trying to show readers what the Bible says, and NOT trying to either mock or endorse the content. I still kept waiting for him to do one or the other, but he really doesn't. A lot of it is light hearted, and I suppose there are people in the world who would take offense at his tone. Heck, there are people who take offense at translations other than the KJV. But I found this book really enlightening. I've never read the Bible cover to cover, and probably never will - I'm sort of ethnically Christian but not religious. I feel like I know a LOT more about Christian theology now. And I've been much more entertained than I ever was at Sunday school.

A lot of info in a 5 hour tape

Enjoyed the basics. Too many people think they know the bible but only know the portions they like. I learned something.

Amazing inclusive rendering and examination

Completely illuminating , simplifies laborious passages of the bible and helps to put meaning and clarification to the parables contained. Plus it's also pretty damned funny
