Publisher's summary

In his newest collection of essays, David Sedaris lifts the corner of ordinary life, revealing the absurdity teeming below its surface. His world is alive with obscure desires and hidden motives, a world where forgiveness is automatic and an argument can be the highest form of love. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is another unforgettable collection from one of the wittiest and most original writers at work today.

Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Winner, Humor and Short Stories/Collections, 2005

"In his latest collection, Sedaris has found his heart. This is not to suggest that the author of Me Talk Pretty One Day and other best-selling books has lost his edge. The 27 essays here include his best and funniest writing yet....What emerges is the deepest kind of humor, the human comedy." (Publishers Weekly)
"Sedaris is a careful writer, with a no-muss, no-fuss style that rarely misfires." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Sedaris' piquant essays are as meticulously honed and precisely timed as the best stand-up comic routines, which is, of course, what they are....Sedaris, openly gay, nervy as a tightrope walker, sharply hilarious, teasingly misanthropic yet genuinely compassionate, has a unique ability to supply exactly the right details to bring every funny, awkward, ludicrous, painful, horrible real-life moment into harrowingly crisp focus....He is mesmerizing." (Booklist)
"Sedaris has a satirical brazenness that holds up next to Mark Twain and Nathanael West." (The New Yorker)

Sedaris captured life's quarks like no other.

David Sedaris has a way of recalling his life's intricacies that is unmatched. His behavioural oddities and those of his family make for endless fodder for his quick wit to whip into delightfully dark observations that made me laugh out loud.

David Sardaris never fails to amuse and entertain

I love D.S. for his dry wit, and his candor regarding everything in his life. I have every one of his audio books and listen to him every night. It doesn’t get old. He has that “Seinfeld” style of humor that you can hear over and over and he is still as funny as the first time you hear it.
My first book was Me Talk Pretty Someday and I have been hooked ever since. His books are even funnier when he reads them; I love when he Iimitates his dad and his brother, Paul.

All the stars!

If I could give this and all of David Sedaris‘s books infinity stars, I would! It’s definitely humor, and it’s definitely satire, but he hits so many societal “nails on the head” perfectly that it just makes it so much fun to listen to! Definitely recommend to all my friends! Hope to emulate his writing someday!

Just thinking about this makes me LOL!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! Sedaris' wry wit is laugh-out-loud hilarious!

Who was your favorite character and why?

David Sedaris; I want to be his friend.

What does David Sedaris bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice and inflections really enhance his stories. I'd tried to read this in the past and grew a bit bored. But I was hooked the moment I heard his voice and dry description of his non-TV-watching neighbors.

Any additional comments?

I'm immediately adding everything he's ever done to my queue!

Dangerous when drinking or eating

Although I don't think that this should be the first of your Sedaris experiences (it helps to listen/read his works in order of production) it is definately one of his best. David Sedaris creates works that cause you to dread their endings. Don't drink anything that you don't want spit across the room or up your nose when listening to him. Start with "Me Talk Pretty One Day" and go from there. Happy listening!

WARNING: Listen to this alone!

Would you consider the audio edition of Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim to be better than the print version?

No way. As ever this is a performance piece.

What did you like best about this story?

Again As with David Sedaris's books I was there. I was in his pocket 'in' France, 'in' the haunted bedroom, 'with' his family.

What does David Sedaris bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His picture imagery which is enhanced by his unique voice inflections

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes. When David was trying to drown the injured mouse and the fashion starved tourist was looking for a 'willage'.

Any additional comments?

Another 'must read' from David Sedaris. FIVE stars all the way.

Laugh of loud funny!

This is a collection of short stories read by the author, mostly about his some what disfuctional family. If you liked Sedaris' last book, "Me Talk Pretty One Day", you will certainly like his new audible selection "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim". David's narration may turn off some listeners, but I find it enhances his stories and makes them funnier. If you're new to Sedaris, check out the audio sample before your purchase. One minor complaint is that several stories (example: "six to eight black men") were taken from previous books of his. Still enjoyable none the less.

Chuckled out loud!

I found myself Iaughing out loud several times when listining to this book! The author was funny and witty with his descriptions growing up, fictional or not, we've all had disfuctional happenings, maybe not to these extremes, but that make us think back and laugh now. I started listening to the book again when I was done. Very enjoyabe!
