Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: There is no funnier way to soak in David Sedaris' humor than through his own voice. This stand-up show encompasses the best tales from his many book collections, and, told in David's hilariously deadpan whine, this is the essential Sedaris, for old fans or newbies alike. — Chris Doheny

Publisher's summary

If you are driving, pull over. If you are at work, close your door, unless you don't mind your colleagues seeing you doubled over, in tears, on your office floor. With this recording, taped before a delirious sold out audience at Carnegie Hall, you are there as David Sedaris performs new stories from his upcoming book. A parrot who mimics an ice maker, lovers quarreling over a rubber hand, and a Santa Claus who moonlights from his job as bishop of Turkey, the cast of characters in these stories is like no other. This new work will appeal to David's loyal fans as well as admirers of the classic comedy albums of George Carlin, Bill Cosby, and Steve Martin.

Recorded live on October 22, 2002, in New York City.

Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Winner, Humor, 2004

"Sedaris's material (Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day) is never funnier than when he's reading it himself." (AudioFile)
"David Sedaris Live at Carnegie Hall is a rollicking comedic masterpiece...this recording will deservedly take its rightful place among the best comedy albums of our time." (AudiobooksTODAY.com)
"As uproarious as Sedaris is on the page, he's even funnier reading his wickedly jaundiced reflections. With brilliant deadpan timing, Sedaris is a charm." (Publishers Weekly)

short and sweet

It was funny and poignant but it was way to short. The audio quality is solid.

Too little for too much

I'll wait for his next full-length audio book, thanks. More than just about any writer you can name, David Sedaris really needs to be heard. But not at this price.

funny!!

I enjoyed this book, at least most of it. The best part was the free sample and it was hard to live up to. I would have rather spent the 12 bucks on a 10 hour book. Enjoy the sample!

Sorry I wasted a credit

Purchased this book based on reviews. What a mistake. I generally think that my opinions on comedy are fairly mainstream. I can only think that the overwhelming positive reviews are based on something other than David's comedy. The publisher's mention of David in the same light as George Carlin, Bill Cosby, and Steve Martin outrageous. David does not come close to these great comedians.

gay humor

Mildly funny. You've got to like gay humor, or have a New York state of mind. After listening once, I'd had enough. Even tho it's "live" it is still read by Sedaris. You can picture him sitting on this great stage reading his own book, and not performing it.

long wait

I guess I was hoping to be rolling over the floor laughing at least once. DS has an hour to make this happen, you know, as a professional comedian ... it did not happen.

Material that exists on other books.

I'm a huge David Sedaris fan, and enjoyed the other two audio books on Audible by the same. However, this live performance is to be skipped, as it has material from the other two books on it. The only difference is that on this version, you get to hear audience reaction, which is fun. Still, I wish I'd saved my money for when audible posts Naked or another Sedaris book.

Interesting but Overpriced

This was my first encounter with David Sedaris in general. I found his style and his humor interesting. I would definitely read more from the writer. His performance of his own material was nice but a little flat and disengaged. Maybe that is his style given the cynicism of his writing. All that said I found this audiobook overpriced for what it had to offer me.

Excellent but too short

David Sedaris’ reading gs of his stories are funny and sharp as ever, but I think it was a mistake for me to spend $11 on a one hour program. Too short.
