Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: There is no funnier way to soak in David Sedaris' humor than through his own voice. This stand-up show encompasses the best tales from his many book collections, and, told in David's hilariously deadpan whine, this is the essential Sedaris, for old fans or newbies alike. — Chris Doheny

Publisher's summary

If you are driving, pull over. If you are at work, close your door, unless you don't mind your colleagues seeing you doubled over, in tears, on your office floor. With this recording, taped before a delirious sold out audience at Carnegie Hall, you are there as David Sedaris performs new stories from his upcoming book. A parrot who mimics an ice maker, lovers quarreling over a rubber hand, and a Santa Claus who moonlights from his job as bishop of Turkey, the cast of characters in these stories is like no other. This new work will appeal to David's loyal fans as well as admirers of the classic comedy albums of George Carlin, Bill Cosby, and Steve Martin.

Recorded live on October 22, 2002, in New York City.

Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Winner, Humor, 2004

"Sedaris's material (Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day) is never funnier than when he's reading it himself." (AudioFile)
"David Sedaris Live at Carnegie Hall is a rollicking comedic masterpiece...this recording will deservedly take its rightful place among the best comedy albums of our time." (AudiobooksTODAY.com)
"As uproarious as Sedaris is on the page, he's even funnier reading his wickedly jaundiced reflections. With brilliant deadpan timing, Sedaris is a charm." (Publishers Weekly)

Love this one!!!!!

I have listened and listened and listened to this offering. I laugh, until tears come, every time I hear the story about Danish Christmas traditions - 'Santa didn't USED to be anything' and the explanation of Danish parents to prepare their children for what they need to do prior to Santa's arrival........this was my first introduction to David Sedaris and I am HOOKED!!! "We love you, Lisa!!!!" from the parrot sends me into fits of giggles - difficult when commuting!!!!!!!

WARNING!!!! You will be crying!!!!

Well, crying with laughter of course!

This was my first David Sedaris book and it has opened the flood gates! Such wit and personality comes through in his readings. I was horrified when it was over!

This is a must listen. Short, but very , very sweet!

Laughed out loud in public places

What did you love best about David Sedaris Live at Carnegie Hall?

David Sedaris is funny on paper, but hearing his delivery makes it about 100 times funnier. I listened to it on BART in San Francisco and I couldn't help but laugh out loud. It cleared out seats around me so I was quite comfortable, and I have David Sedaris to thank for making everyone think I was a crazy person to be feared and avoided.

PERFECT . . .

David Sedaris is a comic genius. I had heard some of the material before (in one of his books), but the audience reactions further heightened the enjoyment. This audio presentation had me laughing for days - I highly recommend it!

Refreshingly clean and riotoriously funny .

David Sedaris contues to write the most refreshingly clean and riotously funny stories of family, friends and experiences in the most relatable of way.
This was my first foray into audible books and I am hooked on his style of storytelling.

Witty, smart & very well read !

My Swiss sence of humour differs sometimes quite a bit from the American one, but that humour is simply brillant! This Live Carnegy Hall recording is so real and therefor funny to listen to. The live audience reacts spontanous and naturally to the reading while David Sedaris pronounces his text as good as only a reader & author can. I heard parts of his longer audio books. They might be longer and less expensive but this one is not only witty and smart but also a show experience. Two Swiss thumps up ! !

An absolute pick-me-up

This was one of the the funniest audio books I've ever heard, another one being Sedaris' "Me Talk Pretty One Day." This one is quite short, but I'll keep it just to play again for friends. Having just finished a book of a weightier subject matter, this was a great break. It was nice to be smiling when I got to work.
