Like plenty before her, social worker Clare Barker has entered a caring profession so that she can sort out other people's problems rather than deal with her own. A control freak, Clare likes nothing better than interfering in other people's lives on both a professional and personal basis, while at the same time finding it a trial having to put up with tiresome members of the public. Politically correct, humourless, and prone to jargon, she is entirely lacking in self-awareness, making her encounters with colleagues, family, and her partner, Brian, wonderfully entertaining and richly comic.

"Wildly funny." (Sunday Times)
"The sharpest script I've heard for years." (The Observer)
The story, the character's personalities, listening and imagining the scenarios. Great radio presentation.
The whole thing, particularly with Brian
Glad there are more series to enjoy
"Clare in the Community"
I knew what to expect when I downloaded this series - as I've listened to it when I can catch it on Radio 4. It's brilliant.
What I didn't expect, was how much my family would love it, too. My teenage girls play this when they wash up, or when we go out in the car. It's clever, hilarious and fantastic entertainment - and though risque at times, it's not crude.
"The social worker you love to hate"
Clare in the Community Series 1: My sister recently sent me this CD and I found myself laughing out loud in the street while listening on my i-pod. It sucks you right in from the beginning with strong narrative drive and great characterisation which plays on social stereotypes, while gently satirising social workers, teachers and the more ludicrous aspects of our increasingly PC world. Sally Phillips, who was so good in the TV series Smack the Pony, is perfect as the self-obsessed social worker bemused by her lack of popularity and oblivious to the needs of her long-suffering partner, Brian, her work colleagues and her clients. Her handling of her student Megan is hilarious, if slightly troubling! I?m definitely hooked and will be signing up for the subsequent series.
"Slow to start but the sixth episode is a classic"
Radio comedy can do things that just aren't possible in any other format. The sixth episode of this series is a masterwork of comic writing and acting.
This is very funny, and not just because Sally Philips is in it, although she is superb. The rest of the cast is also very good and the jokes come thick and fast without overdoing the audio gags and the double entendres. The writing is very tight and has some very clever digs at middle class prejudices and moral panics. Even social workers will find plenty to laugh at!
"Gently funny will buy more"
Gentle humour easy to listen to some off the jokes are a little old hat but Well played
"To be listened to in private"
This is a very funny series. The acting is excellent and the script improves with every series. I admit I will laugh at almost anything but this made me laugh out loud. Please bring out Series 8. It is achingly funny.
Just love this, the cast are so good, the script excellent, loved it on the radio so downloaded every series.
"A refreshing look at society"
Sally Phillips is an exceptionally funny actress at the best of times, but she certainly seems to attain a new level of comedy in this series. As Clare, she assumes the persona of a well-intentioned social worker who is yet blind to the various realities of both her own station in life and the realities facing those she tries to help. She has the habit of presenting a PC, official view which is then shown to be superficial and lacking, which is hilarious if you have ever worked with trying to help others. A must if you have ever been involved in social work, teaching, nursing or any caring profession. Hilarious.
"Put a smile on your face."
This was a perfect listen at the end of my day. Always fell asleep with a smile on my face.
One of the best all time Radio 4 comedy programmes. Well observed, great characters and really funny.
