"compelling and intense; the narrator grew on me"

Like the previous reviewer, I was a little taken aback by the crackly voiced, "old lady-sounding" narrator at first. However, as the book proceded, I decided that I actually liked this narrator. Her voice works b/c much of the narration is told by the housekeeper, Nellie. Moreover, she does a fine job with the voices of the younger women and the accents of the locals, both male and female.

It had been years since I'd picked up Wuthering Heights, and this audio book was a pleasure. The cast of tortured characters and senseless and unjust wrongs propels one to continue even while questioning why such people should matter. They simply do. It is a disturbing, haunting story, with--at long last--a happy ending of sorts.

    "Better than reading it"

I tried to read this book several times and just couldnt get into it- but then I saw this audio version and decided to give it antother shot.

It's kind of a bizzare story, but I also found it to be entertaining and interesting. The narration is fairly good as well.

If you always wanted to know what all the fuss is about regarding Wuthering Heights then this is the way to find out.

"wonderful narration of my favorite novel"

I love the way the narrator doesn't just read the words, but changes her voice and accent with each character. She really made them come to life in my mind as I listened. Thank you Flo Gibson!

"I just HAD to read a classic..."

I have been trying to read all the classics, and this one had been on my list for a while. YAWN. It was hard to hear/understand the narrator at points, which made an only mildly entertaining book a chore to get through.

I have noticed that many classics have more subtle themes and plot lines, but this one was quite dreary. It isn't a happy story, and it is slow going.

    "Horrendous narration"

This is a great story, at least from what I remember when I read it 10 years ago! I enjoyed some of the other classics on audio so much and decided to give this one a try. The narration is awful, so difficult to understand and it seems like it's on fast forward. I had to slow the narration on my ipod so that I could understand what was being said. Very disappointed at the quality of this audiobook, this is a first as I have enjoyed every other narrator I've heard thusfar. The one star is not directed at the story, but at the awful narration!

    "Excellent Narration!"

I don't know that I could have managed this classic reading it myself. The narration made all the difference for me.

    "Wuthering Heights - Withering Me"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Ugh. Please change the narrator. I'm sorry. I tried. I really did. I READ this book eight years ago because it was my mother's favorite book when she was young and I wanted to find its appeal. Well, that reading didn't do it for me.

I thought I'd have a go with an audible version and see if that would help. THIS one certainly didn't. I made it through Chapter 14 and threw in the towel. I started to get used to her voice. I didn't mind the fact that it was a woman voicing a man's character. But JOSEPH. I know from my read of the book that his dialect was already difficult, but it was positively unintelligible in her voice because of the affectation she added to make him sound like a different character.

I am so frustrated by it that I cannot go on.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    See above.

Did Wuthering Heights inspire you to do anything?

    Give up on listening.

    "PAINFULLY SLOW"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A reader whose gender matches the protagonist of the story. Very disconcerting hearing a woman read as though a man is speaking.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator was not well suited to read this book. It was confusing at times.

    Any additional comments?

I had been excited to read this classic for the first time. It was painfully slow to get through. I attribute a good bit of it to the narration.

I rate this book somewhere between 2 and 3 stars, while it was well written, it didn't really seem to be about anything except all the trouble an evil man could pointlessly cause.
