Der Begriff "Universalgeschichte" ist die Übersetzung von dem englischen Wort "Universalhistory", das im damaligen Deutschland eine Diskussion bei Historikern, Philosophen und Theologen ausgelöst hatte. Friedrich Schiller nimmt es als Ausgangspunkt und Thema seiner Vorlesung und zieht seine eigenen Schlüsse. Nachgesprochen wird sie von dem großen Theaterschauspieler und Regisseur Leopold Lindtberg.
