Tolstoy's epic War and Peace chronicles one of the most turbulent eras in Russian history, encompassing the drama and intensity of life during and after the Napoleonic Wars.
This unique, full-cast dramatisation contains over two hours of specially composed music and captures the full atmosphere of Tolstoy's masterpiece.
A star cast of thirty-five includes Leo McKern as General Kutuzov, Emily Mortimer as Natasha Rostov, Simon Russell Beale as Pierre Bezuhov, Jonathan Firth as Nikolai Rostov, Nicola Pagett as Nathalie Rostov, and Amanda Redman as Helene Kuragin.
Tolstoy's insights into human nature and reflections on the concepts of history and war give the novel a breadth and scope that are brought vividly to life in this major Radio 4 Classic Serial which was recorded on location.

This was a very good production of this story. The book is long and arduous -- so much the term "War and Peace" has become a shorthand for saying something is excessively long and difficult to get through.
But, this dramatized version was enjoyable. The story has a great sweep of history with it, and has well-drawn characters who reflect internally about what they see in this world. I became very interested in the happenings of each character.
I did experience the same problem I have with most movies -- the sound effects and sound sometimes cause me to lose the conversation. But that's because these old ears heard too much rock and roll when I was younger. Also, there were so many characters I had a hard time keeping them straight. Fortunately, Wikipedia has a chart online that shows the characters and how they are related to one another.
I think if you want to know the story and characters of War and Peace, this may be a good choice. It's easy listening, and CONSIDERABLY shorter than the novel being read. I don't know if this is due to trimming out scenes, or if dramatizing naturally shortens it. In any case, I recommend it.
This dramatized version was very well done and captured both the epic sweep and memorable personalities of the characters in this classic story.
It takes a while to sort out the characters. I listened to the first hour several times. After that, you are transported. A fantastic experience. Highly recommended.
Although I've never read War and Peace (1500+ pages is daunting), the story is terrific and the dramatization is superb. I recommend, however, because the story is long and their A LOT of characters coming in and out that you read a summary (wikipedia, for example) as it makes it richer and more pleasurable.
this story has all the ruminants of the original. i love the cast. well read. holds the value thru and thru. i can't say anything negative about the way this one turned out. the full performance of cast members was wonderful.
Because this was a BBC radio production it makes an amazing audio book. Lots of background noises, different actors, this is audio at it's best. If you've ever wanted to say I read War and Peace but the book is too daunting then this is the way to go. Oh yeah and it's a pretty good story too.
This is a great dramatization.
I hate to say its my favorite book having only listened to the dramatization, but this is a terrific story.
The actors are fabulous!
The experience of listening to a dramatized version of such an important piece of literature.
This is a wonderful dramatization of a beautiful story. If, like me, you have tried to read 'War & Peace' many times but could not face the long chapters describing the battle scenes, this version is for you.
"A Wonderful Listen"
I have tried to read this and gave up, so I thought I'd try and listen instead. It's an amazing production, the cast is fantastic as is the incidental music. During the main battle scene and towards the end- I won't give anything away- I had tears in my eyes. This is a must for your library.
"An easy-listening epic !"
Superb from beginning to end, an absolute joy to listen to with music that will stir your soul, this is most definitely the way to embrace War and Peace.
The excellently adapted War and Peace series has just finished on the BBC just now. With Paul Dano, Lily James and James Norton playing the leads. It's was so good that I thought I would try this and I was not disappointed. Wonderful actors, clear storyline and with the sound effects to complete the picture - a truly wonderful experience.
"war and Peace"
I have been really enjoying this daily in the car. It has been well dramatised and it is easy to rewind as there are so many confusing names. Very absorbing for long journeys. I have never managed to get into the book itself as the early half of the first part is quite arduous.
"Jolly good listen"
I have tried to read the book but never seem to have the luxury of the time to take on such a large task. So listening to Leo Tolstoy's narration was wonderful and the rest of the cast were equally as good. I was decorating the lounge and the time and work just flew by and I had really enjoyed a classic book!
"A great companion to the unabridged version"
Started to listen to this radio play but found it confusing. Downloaded the unabridged version, am loving it but it is a long read. I am using this version, which seems to be very faithful to the book, as a refreshing review of what I have read. It pulls the whole experience of reading "War and Peace" together. Everyone should attempt this book once in their life.
"What's going on?"
If I had found the family trees on Wiki before I listened to this book then I might have understood better what was going on. It seems every one falls in love with everyone else then some of them go to war. The dramatisation needs more commentary to explain the context.
"Recorded in a cave?"
In general a very good performance, however it is badly let down by the recording studio. Large parts (usually in people's houses) sound like it has been recorded in a cave; at which point you have to adjust the volume. Also the repeating of the last paragraph at the start of each new section gets a little tiresome. Good story though.
I think this is the best recording of this book, even if not the newest.. The cast are excellent, and the voices differentiated enough so that each person is recognisable..
