Not what you think, great book!

My entire life I've been led to believe that to be an "Uncle Tom" is to be weak and unintelligent. Uncle Tom is one of the most heroic characters ever written. Honest, true, loyal, and Christian; and paying for his beliefs with his life. I'd hope to some day be worthy enough to be called an "Uncle Tom".

Heartwarming, heart-wrenching and beautifully told

I picked up this title because I kept hearing black conservatives labeled as "Uncle Toms". I wanted to know what that meant... now I do. And if ANYONE is EVER called that from now on, I'll know it's a moniker of highest esteem and courage!! Now, I have a feeling those hurling the moniker do not intend it to be a compliment, but a compliment it is. No one could read this book and feel otherwise. One thing I also learned is that Uncle Tom's Cabin is the most Jesus-saturated work of fiction I've ever read. I was quite unprepared for the tears that flowed from my eyes when the modeling of Christ and His unjust but willing suffering was presented repeatedly. Oh, the precious blood of Jesus.. oh the love, the love the Spirit of God fills inside Stowe's main and junior story characters. The "sin cycle" the Scriptures teach are rife within these pages: there's black, nasty wickedness of sin, cold and indifferent hate, old belief, repentance, and belief, changed hearts and the faithfulness of God to create new creatures in Christ. There's a deep, beckoning call from the throne of God for His people to rise up against genuine injustice and oppression. Just as Tom begged those around him to be kind, so must we. Written in 1851, Stowe gave me insight into the political structure of her day.. interestingly, she labels Republicans as those who believe in freedom, but social liberals as oppressors that want to enslave and control. Fascinating.

In these times, we need books like this to remind

First, let me say the performance was excellent. The narrator really brought the book to life . I never read this book and always wanted to so now with Audible, it made it possible. The book is full of emotion and brings to life the trails of slavery and what people were subjected to during those times. No wonder it had such a huge impact when it was written. Most definitely a must read book.

What eve ry school child should read

Unfortunately I would think this book can no longer be required reading for our school children because it appropriately co tract rains the "N" word. This would help, I think, give an incite to all the young on some of our Nations h history and specifically why there may yet be a inimosities left in some of the African race.
this was a very good listen.

Must Read!

This is a phenomenal book that everyone should read. My only complaint is with the audio quality. The author would be very soft at times and sharp at others. It was difficult to find a volume that worked consistently. But the book itself is amazing and something everyone should listen to if you want to know what slavery was like in America.

Resonates today

The original sin of the USA- slavery and institutional bigotry- is still, perplexingly, strong today.

Beecher Stowe paints her characters in exacting and flowery detail. The Audible narrator is skillful in creating the many voices of the story.

The book, being old fashioned, is heavy on the Christian overtones that inform the whole story- from the suffering, Christ-like Uncle Tom to cruel overseers, to the embodiment of Pontius Pilate- Simon Legree.

It still wrings empathy for the characters, who are all drawn from real life stories told to, and personal encounters by, the author.

The book was a rallying cry for abolitionists and helped turn public opinion towards ending slavery.

Should be required reading for all Americans.
