Publisher's summary

Originally published in 1845 as a sequel to The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After is a supreme creation of suspense and heroic adventure.

Two decades have passed since the three musketeers triumphed over Cardinal Richelieu and Milady. Time has weakened their resolve and dispersed their loyalties. But treasons and stratagems still cry out for justice: civil war endangers the throne of France, while in England, Cromwell threatens to send Charles I to the scaffold. Dumas brings his immortal quartet out of retirement to cross swords with time, the malevolence of men, and the forces of history. But their greatest test is a titanic struggle with the son of Milady, who wears the face of Evil.

Very goof, not great.

Voice of Dartanion was quite flat like a robot by not like a military man! Story telling by readers was excellent.

Great story, unsure about he narrator.

Great story! It is perhaps better than the 3 musketeers. Initially the narrator's voice and choice of character accents and speaking mannerisms were extremely annoying and unnatural. I'm not yet sure whether it was I that became accustomed to the narrator or that he became more relaxed, but after a few hours of perseverance, the reading became quite enthralling. It was fairly easy to distinguish most of the main characters from their distinctive voices. I almost stopped listening to it after the first few hours do to the coupling of the narrator's voce and Dumas' typical long winded descriptions of irrelevant characters and events. I glad that I didn't abandon this audio book!

One of the best in the saga.

Loved everything about this book. By far the best narrator of the books in the series. For one, the only reader who sounds like a Frenchman or someone who understands French. They way he adds nuance to aaa's is amazing, you can hear the difference between 'i was mistaken and must rethink' to 'my good friend it is indeed you'. The opening of the book asks the listen to be patient, yes d'Artagnan sounds like a boorish middle aged man talking to a stingy Cardinal Marazain, but they both get much more interesting after the set up. Stick with it, it is more than worth it!

Even better than the first book

So, we all know the story of “The Three Musketeers” or at least we’ve heard of it and have some idea of the characters. But, there were two other books that brought them back together again later, and this is one of them. From the title, you can easily guess that it happens 20 years after the first book. At the end of the first book, the four heroes (yes, there are actually 4 musketeers, 3 plus the narrator) part ways. France has changed much in 20 years and a new challenge prompts D’Artagnan to find his three friends and try to get them to join him. However, the changes in France and there is a conflict between the monarchy and groups trying to give more power to the Parliament such that France is on the brink of civil war. And, there is an evil Cardinal who, though not as clever and powerful as Cardinal Richelieu. However, in the 20 years that have passed, the 4 friends have gone in different directions and their loyalties are now split between the two sides. But, their friendship is as strong as ever. Like the first book, there is a lot of adventure, intrigue, and demonstrations of chivalry. Dumas skilfully weaves the story around actual history and real people as in the first book. The story then becomes a test of the strength of their friendship. Again they visit England, but not together and for different purposes. The English King Charles I is facing execution and they are on different sides. I actually liked this book better than “The Three Musketeers.” I felt that I got into the characters better and they felt more real. You can see their personality from the first book coming through but with more maturity developed through the experiences they have had together and in the 20 years apart. It deserves to be the classic that it is and will keep your interest to the end.

Terrific follow up to the 3 musketeers!

Alexander Dumas does it again! Terrific story, amazing characters and just totally gripping! I enjoyed the audio version, the narrator does a really good job doing so many voices for the many characters in the book. This is the first audiobook novel I’ve listened too that is so long and was so entertaining. Highly recommend it

Great story, horrible narrator

I recently finished this book after listening to "The Three Musketeers" narrated by John Lee. The story was excellent, but the narrator almost killed it for me. Besides the fact that he had trouble maintaining the same voices for characters from chapter to chapter, the voices which he chose seemed to detract from the characters. The editing was also somewhat sloppy because I occasionally thought that I could hear papers rustling and also the narrator tripped up slightly on several sentences which I felt should have been edited. Anyway, I would give the story 5 stars and the narrator 0.
