    "Narration unsteady in volume"
Would you be willing to try another one of Alfred Molina’s performances?

No. Alfred Molina, while he has a lovely voice, tends to drop the volume of his voice at the end of each sentence - making it difficult, if not impossible, to hear. I found myself continuously turning the volume up, then back down again - until I just gave up and stopped listening.

    Any additional comments?

Try this book by another narrator.

"A timeless classic, with a gifted narrator"

Within a few moments you realize this is something special. The same classic enjoyed years ago, but brought to life in full measure in the hands of the amazing Alfred Molina. A bedtime story told by a master narrator, an actor. Of all the audio books you might listen to in a year, this will either be the best, or among the best. What a treat. Every moment. Thank you Mr. Molina.

"A treasure in every sense of the word"

A great adventure. A range of characters from innocent to bullying to shrewd to gullible to an evil genius all brought to life by one of the best narrators I've had the pleasure to listen to through audible.com. And let's not forget the adventure itself -- a search for buried treasure. This was as magical as the Harry Potter books. Download it! It will become an instant favorite.

    "very bad audio"

About 9 min into the recording, it sounds like his mike is not plugged in fully, there is terrible noise and distortion, extremely distracting. I kept listening, but it continues intermittently. This is supposed to be professional recording?!? Totally unacceptable.

    "Worthy Many Pieces of Eight!"

Molina does a fantastic job representing all of the many characters. I do agree his dropping off in volume on many instances was irritating, but then I do most of my listening in the car where there is more background noise.

The chapters move briskly, and I really felt transported back in time. Will look for more read by Molina (truly enjoyed his latest, The Starling Project).

"Revisiting my childhood in the most wonderful way"
What made the experience of listening to Treasure Island the most enjoyable?

Alfred Molina does a great job of narrating the book in a way that makes every word seem precious and important.

What did you like best about this story?

Nostalgia. This book brought me back to sitting in my room at night, reading abridged versions of various classics thanks to Reader's Digest. It was a wonderful trip back that ended far too fast.

Which character – as performed by Alfred Molina – was your favorite?

I particularly liked the portrayal of John Silver. Molina made him seem likable despite his scheming and plotting.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Just read the book!

    Any additional comments?

I originally came to listen to this because of the TV show Black Sails, which serves as a prequel of sorts. I ended up staying because of the pure joy of it. I consumed this book in one setting, as if it were a long anticipated meal. I wish so much that this could have been forty hours or more of this story and these characters.

    "Quintessential pirate adventure"

I had always meant to read this, ever since I saw the abridged version on Wishbone when I was a kid. Of course, in the back of my mind, the more prominent version was by the Muppets with Tim Curry as Silver. He is always the quintessential pirate in my mind. Reading the book finally, or rather listening to Alfred Molina reading it (superbly!) was well worth it. Classic. I think the original pirate adventure story. I thought the narrative was a bit detached and too objective sounding at times, especially for the voice of the main character recalling the escapade, but on the whole, the scenes and characters were painted well. At times I felt as if I were right there with them watching the treacheries unfold on the island, and was holding my breath during every fight scene, especially when Jim was aboard ship on his own. I could never imagine taking such risks as he did throughout this story, but they made for a darn good adventure tale.

Molina was the perfect voice for this audiobook too, equally able with scoundrel pirate voices, dignified noble doctor and captain, and softer voiced young men. I thought at the beginning that my remembrances of the villains he had played in films would color what I heard, but his narrating was seamless and I almost didn't remember who it was, it could have been a whole cast of men.

I would imagine this would be the perfect story any lover of a good sea adventure.

"Maybe it was the narrator, but i hated it."
What disappointed you about Treasure Island?

I could never get into the story. Maybe I should try the paperback version.

What could Robert Louis Stevenson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    N/A.

What didn’t you like about Alfred Molina’s performance?

He would often get too quiet. then suddenly extremely loud. the constant volume changes had me focusing more on his voice than the story.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Boredom.
