Audible Editor Reviews

Anne Hathaway is nothing short of masterful in her narration of Baum’s beloved classic. As she guides listeners through the world of munchkins, winkies, and quadlings; witches; and the humbug Oz, Hathaway’s impressive vocal repertoire shines. As narrator, she is lithe yet precise; her voice sounds lilting or emphatic, as the story details require. In character, she is spectacular. Each character is filled with personality - a light-voiced Witch of the North; a brusque soldier at Oz’s palace; a monotone, robot-like Oz; and a usually cheerful and genuine Dorothy. The variety enriches the listening experience. Yes, one may know the story well, but Hathaway makes this recording a definitive one.

One of the best-known stories in American culture, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over 100 years. Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming one of this year’s most anticipated films, The Dark Knight Rises, lends her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.

Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto as they get swept away into the magical land of Oz , where they encounter characters and places you may remember from the movie – and several more that never made it to the big screen – on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City.

“It’s such a wonderful book and I was so happy to be a part of bringing it to life”, Ms. Hathaway said. “There are a lot of great voices in it. The more fun you have with it, the sillier and the more free you get with it, the better it is because it’s a story that can handle it. It’s amazing to be able to discover something new about something you feel you know so well.”

    "Disappointed"
What would have made The Wonderful Wizard of Oz better?

Change the narrator. Her voice and style are horrible, I listened to about 5 minutes of the audio book and quit.

"A great narration for a kindergarten class"

Listen to the audio sample of this book before purchasing. I really like Anne Hathaway but she narrated The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as if she was reading to a kindergarten class. I was annoyed by her narration.

This was my first time reading this book in any form. I have to say that I liked the original movie better. This isn't true for most books but I liked what the screen writers did with the plot. They took a good story and made it into fantastic story.

More than anything else, it helps me to know what books a reviewer loves most when deciding on whether or not to spend my time or money on a particular book. Below I have listed some of my 5 or 4½ star books from many different genres:

Anne of Green Gables, The Book Thief, Bossypants, Catch Me if You Can, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, A Christmas Carol, The Clan of the Cave Bear series, The Color Purple, The Davinci Code, A Dog’s Purpose, Emma, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, A Girl Named Zippy, Glass Castle, Gone with the Wind, The Green Mile, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, The Harry Potter Series, The Help, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy 1-3, The Hunger Games, To Kill a Mockingbird, Let’s Pretend this Never Happened, Little Women, Mind Hunter, Nineteen Minutes, The Outlander series, Peace like a River, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Pride and Prejudice, Saving Sammy, The Secret life of Bees, Shawshank Redemption, My Sister’s Keeper, Stand by Me, The Stand, The Time Traveler’s Wife, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn...

    "Long past due!"
Would you listen to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz again? Why?

    Yes!
I must admit I never read the story as a child, and now that I am a mother of three I figured it was about time I had. I loved Anne Hathaway, however a few of the voices she chose to use for characters were a tad annoying.
I can't wait for my kids to become more interested in listening to audio books, I think they will all enjoy this one for sure.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Nothin she did a great job and it was well read.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes if I could have I would of.

    Any additional comments?

This is a great story I loved it and will listen to it over and over again.

    "Fun story to listen to."
Would you consider the audio edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to be better than the print version?

    The same.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Some of the character interpretations seemed a bit cheesy. At times I thought I was listening to Marge Simpson as one of the characters.
