Anne Hathaway is nothing short of masterful in her narration of Baum’s beloved classic. As she guides listeners through the world of munchkins, winkies, and quadlings; witches; and the humbug Oz, Hathaway’s impressive vocal repertoire shines. As narrator, she is lithe yet precise; her voice sounds lilting or emphatic, as the story details require. In character, she is spectacular. Each character is filled with personality - a light-voiced Witch of the North; a brusque soldier at Oz’s palace; a monotone, robot-like Oz; and a usually cheerful and genuine Dorothy. The variety enriches the listening experience. Yes, one may know the story well, but Hathaway makes this recording a definitive one.

“It’s such a wonderful book and I was so happy to be a part of bringing it to life”, Ms. Hathaway said. “There are a lot of great voices in it. The more fun you have with it, the sillier and the more free you get with it, the better it is because it’s a story that can handle it. It’s amazing to be able to discover something new about something you feel you know so well.”

My 5 year old listened to this book with me over two days. We both enjoyed it. I was amazed at Anne Hathaway's versatility in her narration. Only 1 or 2 of her voices were quite annoying. The rest were marvelous. My five year old was completely captivated and listened to this book straight over many hours.
The ending (after the hot air balloon takes off with the wizard) is so different from the movie. My five-year old says, "I love the part where the wall is made out of china and the people are made from china.
Dorothy and the Tin Man were our favorites.
Yes, but we couldn't finish it; we had a life to live along the way!
Highly recommend for kids. What a treat that it was free!
Filmmaker and artist in Los Angeles.
Hathaway voices all the characters differently and adds emotion to the voices. It's absolutely awesome. I love the way these books are written as well. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. No regrets at all picking this one of the many choices!
First of all, this is the REAL Wizard of Oz, so even if you didn't like the movie, give it a try. Baum's classic tale is classic for a reason; it tells a clever, insightful, and important story...all wrapped up in a disguise of fun and humor.
Second, Anne Hathaway does an amazing job of bringing the characters to life, making the story seem to play out inside your head, and never losing her focus. She should do more audibles!
Last, this is the kind of thing you can play anywhere. Turn it into a family activity on a long trip, listen to a chapter per night with the kids at bedtime, or enjoy it all by yourself and remember the joy of childhood wonder. If your earphones slip free of your device while this is playing, you aren't going to be embarrassed or offend anyone nearby.
I highly recommend this one!
Anne does a wonderful job with all the voices, making the story so real!
There is no comparison, this book is one of a kind.
I loved when Anne played the Lion, but let's be honest, all of her portrayals were fantastic! Everyone had such a distinct voice!
Audiobooks are like games for readers.
I was never a big fan of Oz. I didn't enjoy the film nor the theatrical performances I saw growing up. However, I had never read or listened to the book and Hathaway's reading was phenomenal. I hope she reads some others in the future!
Energy that promotes character individualization.
I'm glad we decided to listen, it is different than the film, but I enjoy it more. My 5 yr old son is just loving it.
In this version, Anne Hathaway
Don't believe there is a comparison
You just got to love Anne
And I did
It is not one of the greatest stories ever told for nothing.
The colourful characters.
i could have - yes
Anne Hathaway's voicework. She embodies the characters with their own distinct voice and personality. It was extremely entertaining and brought the story to life.
When they meet the Wizard. Anne gives him a unique voice. My sons loved listening to her.
I smiled a lot and even laughed out loud as I listened with my sons (11, 10 & 9). It was in watching their wonderment that I truly experienced the story all over again.
Anne Hathaway does a very good job of reading and performing the story. It may be a little too dark for very young children. However for older children and adults it offers a very good listen. However, don't expect the storyline from the movie or even from Maguire's WICKED book, if you do you will be disappointed. The characters you know are all there but they are different and the plot is different. I would recommend the story to anyone who want's a different take on the Wizard of Oz story.
