Anne Hathaway is nothing short of masterful in her narration of Baum’s beloved classic. As she guides listeners through the world of munchkins, winkies, and quadlings; witches; and the humbug Oz, Hathaway’s impressive vocal repertoire shines. As narrator, she is lithe yet precise; her voice sounds lilting or emphatic, as the story details require. In character, she is spectacular. Each character is filled with personality - a light-voiced Witch of the North; a brusque soldier at Oz’s palace; a monotone, robot-like Oz; and a usually cheerful and genuine Dorothy. The variety enriches the listening experience. Yes, one may know the story well, but Hathaway makes this recording a definitive one.

“It’s such a wonderful book and I was so happy to be a part of bringing it to life”, Ms. Hathaway said. “There are a lot of great voices in it. The more fun you have with it, the sillier and the more free you get with it, the better it is because it’s a story that can handle it. It’s amazing to be able to discover something new about something you feel you know so well.”

Cranky elderly writer/copy editor
Ms. Hathaway brought one smile, one grin after another to my face as she infused new life into old and beloved characters for me. Her diction was outstanding and even the most minor of players (the stork, for instance) got their opportunity to shine. Having grown up with the book rather than the movie, I am just tickled to pieces at this reading.
This was one of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to!
The voices were so well done!
I cannot recall one favorite. The entire audio was great!
My 6 year old and I listened to this book every day on the way to and from school. He could not wait to get in the car to listen to more. It was wonderful to see him so excited about a story!
Illini fan and bibliophile
The first book in L. Frank Baum's Oz series is a masterpiece, and Anne Hathaway's narration only makes it better. She doesn't just read the book - she performs the book. I could listen to this book over and over. I wish that she would narrate all of the books in the series.
It's just fun. Anne Hathaway really gets into the voices, with lots of enthusiasm..
Wow, the book is so much different then the movie - in a good way. Hollywood butchered books even back then.
Loved the story.
Anne Hathaway brings the story to life.
We listened to the audiobook on a very long drive with the kids. They asked to listen to it again at bedtime.
No, they are two very different mediums. The book is classic and the audio edition is classic entertainment to the tenth power.
The reference to silver slippers made me smile.
This is my first.
I plan to share this with my granddaughters. Then I'll laugh or cry.
Wonderful story very well read. Time well spent.
Anne Hathaway has a great tallent with giving life to the characters through her voice. Each character has a unique voice and keeps you interested while allowing you to imediately recognize which character is currently speaking. Reminds me of the times i was read to sleep when i was young.
Though all her characters were performed well i would have to say the tin woodsman would be my favorite. Anne's voice creates this calm and colected, perpetualy undisturbed quality that worked very well throughout the story.
In the top 10 percent.
The scarecrow because of the way Anne Hathaway portrayed his voice.
The variation in the different characters and it sounded like she was having fun recording it.
I extremely enjoyed listening to Anne Hathaway read The Wizard of Oz. She has a wonderful interpretation of this story and is very animated. She gives each character a unique voice and so gives the story life. She paints a lovely picture and created empathy with all of the characters and their plights. It is a very charming children's story that even adults and teens will enjoy with smiles and laughter.
