Anne Hathaway is nothing short of masterful in her narration of Baum’s beloved classic. As she guides listeners through the world of munchkins, winkies, and quadlings; witches; and the humbug Oz, Hathaway’s impressive vocal repertoire shines. As narrator, she is lithe yet precise; her voice sounds lilting or emphatic, as the story details require. In character, she is spectacular. Each character is filled with personality - a light-voiced Witch of the North; a brusque soldier at Oz’s palace; a monotone, robot-like Oz; and a usually cheerful and genuine Dorothy. The variety enriches the listening experience. Yes, one may know the story well, but Hathaway makes this recording a definitive one.

One of the best-known stories in American culture, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over 100 years. Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming one of this year’s most anticipated films, The Dark Knight Rises, lends her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.
Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto as they get swept away into the magical land of Oz , where they encounter characters and places you may remember from the movie – and several more that never made it to the big screen – on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City.
“It’s such a wonderful book and I was so happy to be a part of bringing it to life”, Ms. Hathaway said. “There are a lot of great voices in it. The more fun you have with it, the sillier and the more free you get with it, the better it is because it’s a story that can handle it. It’s amazing to be able to discover something new about something you feel you know so well.”

Don't know. Have never read print version.
Dorothy's interaction with the scarecrow.
Great tool to help engage children in reading!
I would probably not try a book from either.
Perhaps books from the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe series, but only for the "road trip" aspect.
Her scarecrow voice was particularly irritating, and all of the voices were a bit too cunning, like an adult talking down to a child.
I will undoubtedly watch the movie again.
Tthe story is a classic, and different from the movie, of course, and well worth enjoying again. I think a child would find the narration acceptable, but I'm not entirely sure if the story isn't a bit scary for younger listeners.
It was good to hear the actual, original Wonderful Wizard of Oz and see just how different it is from the movie. While a better book adaptation that many more modern movies, the famous movie still missed a lot of the highlights of the book.
The best part of this audiobook, however, was the performance. Anne Hathaway does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life, giving each of them their own unique (and as in the case of the stork, for me anyway, somewhat unexpected) voices. She helped me to be immersed in the world in a way that the movie never managed proving that while pictures may be worth a thousand words, a well-spoken word can be worth a thousand pictures.
I'm not a huge fan of the movie but wanted to experience the book. Anne Hathaway made it well worth the listen. She is pure joy.
I like to listen to adventure stories and funny stories. I have a real preference for travel tales and sometimes even enjoy a good mystery. I love fiction, but also like to learn facts. I like all kinds of stories. Follow me, if you do too!
I'd say this book is in the top 75% of all those I've listened to. It's fun and a nice reminder of one of the greatest joys of my childhood! I lived to watch this every year when it was televised! Judy Garland's performance is renowned, of course. Listen to her rendition of "Over the Rainbow" on YouTube and then begin your journey to Oz!
I'll always cherish EVERY moment involving the Scarecrow - he is, indeed, the one "I miss most of all"!
I thought she made a very believable Dorothy. Dorothy is one of the first, true female heroes. She is polite and feminine, yet very determined and brave - a girl ahead of her time.
It's ALWAYS makes me laugh and cry!
Get it, just for the fun of it!
Ms. Hathaway's reading. It's just a stroke of genius.
Everything. I don't watch movies much so I only heard of her name before. But after listening to this, I'm a big fan of her.
Cranky elderly writer/copy editor
Ms. Hathaway brought one smile, one grin after another to my face as she infused new life into old and beloved characters for me. Her diction was outstanding and even the most minor of players (the stork, for instance) got their opportunity to shine. Having grown up with the book rather than the movie, I am just tickled to pieces at this reading.
I never read the book and its way different than the movie so it made it fun
love her voice
My 5.5 year old has been listening to this on car trips. Following the story easily with the vocal characterizations. Nicely, simply done. I find some of the vocalizations a little silly, but they really help to distinguish an audio book with so many characters and one reader. It's not a full production with sound effects and multiple actors, but a sincere reading of a children's classic. I recommend it.
Anne Hathaway's performance. I would love to see (hear!) she performing another books. And I really liked the idea of the A-List Collection.
Well, I think the story is pretty well-known by almost everyone.
Since I'm not an native english speaker her performance helps me to understand some excerpts without having to pick the dictionary.
No, because I did know many parts of the story before reading it.
I would love to hear Anne Hathaway performing another books. And I really liked the idea of the A-List Collection.
"Good reading of a classic"
This is very well read by Anne Hathaway, engaging for the children who listened with wrapt attention. It is a familiar tale to most British children, although some of the scenes are quite frightening for young ones (much as the film is). The story is more elaborate than the film, and has an extended coda.
"The great world of Oz"
Always been very found of the Wizard of Oz collection and must say this audible version is very good. Anne Hathaway gives life to this world and characters and her reading is very good.
I enjoyed this a great version for kids to listen to!
I guess everybody knows the story about Dorothy and Toto. If not from the movie with Ms. Garland then from reading the story by L. Frank Baum. But hearing it being narrated by Anne Hathaway is another dimension. I loved how she changes her voice to portrait the different characters. The story came to life again for me. I never read the sequels to the book, but this has prompted me to start doing so. I recommend this audiobook to anyone who loves a good story. Being Dutch I also recommend this audiobook to other Dutch people who love to read and hear stories in English.
