Anne Hathaway is nothing short of masterful in her narration of Baum’s beloved classic. As she guides listeners through the world of munchkins, winkies, and quadlings; witches; and the humbug Oz, Hathaway’s impressive vocal repertoire shines. As narrator, she is lithe yet precise; her voice sounds lilting or emphatic, as the story details require. In character, she is spectacular. Each character is filled with personality - a light-voiced Witch of the North; a brusque soldier at Oz’s palace; a monotone, robot-like Oz; and a usually cheerful and genuine Dorothy. The variety enriches the listening experience. Yes, one may know the story well, but Hathaway makes this recording a definitive one.
Audie Award Nominee, Solo Narration - Female, 2013
One of the best-known stories in American culture, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over 100 years. Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming one of this year’s most anticipated films, The Dark Knight Rises, lends her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.
Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto as they get swept away into the magical land of Oz , where they encounter characters and places you may remember from the movie – and several more that never made it to the big screen – on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City.
“It’s such a wonderful book and I was so happy to be a part of bringing it to life”, Ms. Hathaway said. “There are a lot of great voices in it. The more fun you have with it, the sillier and the more free you get with it, the better it is because it’s a story that can handle it. It’s amazing to be able to discover something new about something you feel you know so well.”
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is part of Audible’s A-List Collection, featuring the world’s most celebrated actors narrating distinguished works of literature that each star had a hand in selecting. For more great books performed by Hollywood’s finest, click here.

Fantasy, Sci-fi, paranormal, suspense- few of my favorite genres Listen to english, french, and spanish
I particularly loved Anne Hathaway's choice of voice for the Scarecrow, it was funny and a bit silly, perfect for the character!
There is an amazing set of voices for all the characters and a good use of dry wit and sarcasm that may not have been as evident in the written word which added humor.
The story was more fun. It introduced villages by color. The movie took a few different turns where I preferred the books descriptions and developments by chapter.
Alice in Wonderland.
Yes, very enjoyable.
An absolutely wonderful narration by Anne Hathaway! She gives each character a voice and it was a delight to listen. Perfect for all ages.
What puts the audio version above the printed version is Ms Hathaway's ability to bring the characters to life. With many voices she was able to convey the personalities of the people of OZ.
This is the original and not the screen play that we have been subject to for years. So many differences to compare with the movie made it very entertaining.
I loved all her voices and character interpretations. I did not enjoy the voice of the Scarecrow because it reminded me too much of Marge Simpson.
Mom to twin boys
My seven year olds have wanted to see the movie but it's scary. The book was a perfect option. They loved it so much they listened in one day!
I loved this series as a child. It is a much weirder story than I had recalled. As an adult I find some of it repetitive and not all of the adventures seemed important to the overall development of the story, but it is so imaginative and wonderfully bizarre that it was still very enjoyable. Also the reader does an absolutely amazing job with all of the characters and has immense energy.
Maybe if they were interested in a excellent reading of the Wizard of OZ.
All of Anne Hathaway voices and the differences between the book and the movie I saw as a child.
Not sure I had one favorite. I liked the differences that I would notice between the movie adaptation and the original story. Silver instead of ruby slippers, the fact that Dorthy was not dreaming when she visited Oz, but went there and returned home. The inclusion of two different good witches (North and South). There are a good amount of differences between the two, but both are enjoyable in their own format.
No, but I did smile a few times.
Though I haven't finished the selection, I have found Anne's vocal performance to be interesting and entertaining, with diverse voice adaptations, and overall excellent vocal clarity.
I rediscovered parts of the story that I had forgotten.
My favorite scene was when Dorothy first landed in Oz.
Dorothy's interactions with the Lion, Scarecrow and Tinman brought a smile to my face but also sadness when I listened to their life stories before they met Dorothy.
I really really loved the first half of this book, and found it in many ways superior to the movie that I've known and loved since childhood.
Once the story veered into the unknown however, I found that it dragged, and was almost boring.
Anne Hathaway's narration was sensational, she actually gave me goosebumps in places. Highly recommended.
Word Magic ... makes the world go around. Be a better listener than talker.
What would have made The Wonderful Wizard of Oz better?
Change the narrator. Her voice and style are horrible, I listened to about 5 minutes of the audio book and quit.
The above review is soo bogus!!! How sickening. Anne Hathaway cannot be beaten in this audio book rendition of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I've listened to this several times, each time finding myself in such a wonderful mood - smiling from ear to ear with her marvelous character voices. It was sooo much fun. The story, the narration are all so awesome.
Anne Hathaway does a great job of bringing this story to life. She uses different voices to depict the characters and I looked forward to my next instalment each day. The story is good, and there are some variations from the film which is interesting. I will definitely be looking for other books read by Anne Hathaway. My only complaint is I wish it was longer!!!
I guess everybody knows the story about Dorothy and Toto. If not from the movie with Ms. Garland then from reading the story by L. Frank Baum. But hearing it being narrated by Anne Hathaway is another dimension. I loved how she changes her voice to portrait the different characters. The story came to life again for me. I never read the sequels to the book, but this has prompted me to start doing so. I recommend this audiobook to anyone who loves a good story. Being Dutch I also recommend this audiobook to other Dutch people who love to read and hear stories in English.
"Good reading of a classic"
This is very well read by Anne Hathaway, engaging for the children who listened with wrapt attention. It is a familiar tale to most British children, although some of the scenes are quite frightening for young ones (much as the film is). The story is more elaborate than the film, and has an extended coda.
"The great world of Oz"
Always been very found of the Wizard of Oz collection and must say this audible version is very good. Anne Hathaway gives life to this world and characters and her reading is very good.
I enjoyed this a great version for kids to listen to!
"wonderful wizard of OZ"
It was a great book, where Dorothy and the others travel to OZ to find their true happiness, listen to find out if their wishes come true...!
"a true classic read by a classy lady"
i remember that as a child, TWOO was one of the first books i read cover to cover. it was a rainy Saturday, and i curled in the corner of my parents 70s orange sofa. much later i had a crush on Anne Hathaway. so this performance is the best of all worlds. pure joy.
