Audible Editor Reviews

Anne Hathaway is nothing short of masterful in her narration of Baum’s beloved classic. As she guides listeners through the world of munchkins, winkies, and quadlings; witches; and the humbug Oz, Hathaway’s impressive vocal repertoire shines. As narrator, she is lithe yet precise; her voice sounds lilting or emphatic, as the story details require. In character, she is spectacular. Each character is filled with personality - a light-voiced Witch of the North; a brusque soldier at Oz’s palace; a monotone, robot-like Oz; and a usually cheerful and genuine Dorothy. The variety enriches the listening experience. Yes, one may know the story well, but Hathaway makes this recording a definitive one.

Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Nominee, Solo Narration - Female, 2013

One of the best-known stories in American culture, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over 100 years. Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming one of this year’s most anticipated films, The Dark Knight Rises, lends her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.

Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto as they get swept away into the magical land of Oz , where they encounter characters and places you may remember from the movie – and several more that never made it to the big screen – on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City.

“It’s such a wonderful book and I was so happy to be a part of bringing it to life”, Ms. Hathaway said. “There are a lot of great voices in it. The more fun you have with it, the sillier and the more free you get with it, the better it is because it’s a story that can handle it. It’s amazing to be able to discover something new about something you feel you know so well.”

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is part of Audible’s A-List Collection, featuring the world’s most celebrated actors narrating distinguished works of literature that each star had a hand in selecting. For more great books performed by Hollywood’s finest, click here.

    "A Wonderful Surprise"

I had never read the printed version of the book so I didn't really know what to expect from the audio version. Now I'm glad that I listened to the audiobook first because I absolutely loved this reading by Anne Hathaway. It was so much fun! She went all out with different voices for the different characters and it felt almost like theatre in my head.

The story is also a timeless classic for good reason. If you enjoyed the movie, the book offers a darker side to the tale and is definitely worth looking into.

Have not listened to another book.

What does Anne Hathaway bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I did not finish it. But my 12 year old loves the book.

    "Enjoyable"

This is a childhood favorite of mine and fondly remember my father explaining the economical and historical allegory. I wanted to hear it again. It was much shorter than I remembered but is just as wonderful. If you are not looking for the historical allegory its still a fabulous childrens book. I do have to say I was suprised that I did not enjoy the narrator as much as I expected. I love Anne Hathaway but her interpretation of the scarecrow was very hard for me to listen too. This is still a great listen for both parent and child or just for an adult.

    "In the Minority"

I'm in the minority about Anne Hathaway's performance. I thought she was wonderful with the narration but when she did the different voices and accents I found they were very annoying. The scarecrow sounded like Marge Simpson, one of the other characters sounded like a french maid and another one a valley girl. I love the movie and had never read the original story. I still have to say I love the movie better than the book

Would you listen to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz again? Why?

YES. I would b/c there are some small details I'm sure I missed while listening. But I would only listen to it again after I looked at the movie to try to compare.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The scarecrow, because although he said he didn't have a brain he was able to think out plans to save them when they were under attack from wicked witch until she sent the flying monkeys.

    Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was the attack from the wicked witch.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some scenes made me laugh out loud.

    Any additional comments?

I learnedly something new in the book the slippers are silver and not red as the movie depicts them. Also the demise of the second wicked witch. Although she died of melting as in the movie it wasn't because Dorothy was try to put the flames out on the scarecrow. It just makes me wonder why Hollywood would put that little spend on it from all those years ago. Excellent book great classic!

What did you love best about The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?

Of course, I know the movie and I remember reading these books as a child, so I was already favorable disposed to the Wizard of Oz but I was delighted with the audio performance from Anne Hathaway. I am new to Audible and this audio book made a good impression on me. Thank you.

Would you be willing to try another book from L. Frank Baum? Why or why not?

Yes but that comes from my having read the books as a child. I suppose it depends on the artist who narrates.

"Prepare to fall in love again!"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to be better than the print version?

Yes, indeed! While I love reading (my favorite activity) I was entranced by Anne Hathaway's spectacular rendition of the various characters in Oz. She brings a liveliness and sparkle to all the voices which makes this one of those books where you deliberately miss the off-ramp just to keep listening a few minutes longer (you know you do it too). The book is a charming little children's tale. The audio version is a breathless leap into a world that defies imagination.

What other book might you compare The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to and why?

Nothing really compares to the world of Oz. But, for fun you might like Gregory Maguire's alternate take on the Oz myth, Wicked and the sequels. Not as good as Baum's originals but good nonetheless.

    Which scene was your favorite?

While it is impossible to pick out a single favorite, I have to say everything with the soft-spoken wizard was delightful. Hathaway's southern inflected wizard is a joy.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me grin like a maniac with pleasure. This performance is close to perfect. In fact, give it a ten! Or, maybe an eleven (with apologies to Spinal Tap).

    Any additional comments?

Don't think this is just for kids. Be warned though. Stodgy people, young or old, will not like or get it. But then, they never did.
