Set in Mississippi during the Civil War and Reconstruction, The Unvanquished focuses on the Sartoris family, who, with their code of personal responsibility and courage, stand for the best of the Old South's traditions.

Probably the most accessible of Faulkner's novels, THE UNVANQUISHED is set the earliest (at the end of the Civil War forward about 15 years) and is a novel as a collection of sequential, connected short stories about the coming of age of Bayard Sartoris and his friend/slave Ringo. It contains what I think is the finest moment of love/desire in all of Faulkner's work in the final story called, "An Odor of Verbena."
I agree with another reviewer when he called this a Gateway to Faulkner in that it's probably the easiest to read and scattered through his other novels, which are all set primarily later in time, are the characters introduced, whether briefly or in full, in this novel or their descendants.
