Publisher's summary

The Two Towers is the second volume of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic saga, The Lord of the Rings.

The Fellowship has been forced to split up. Frodo and Sam must continue alone towards Mount Doom, where the One Ring must be destroyed. Meanwhile, at Helm’s Deep and Isengard, the first great battles of the War of the Ring take shape.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien’s great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe - hobbits, elves, and wizards - spring to life. Rob Inglis’ narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Literary Audio Masterpiece

I read the LotR series multiple times as a teenager. Frodo, Gandalf and the Fellowship got me thru some rough times. I lived in Middle Earth for a number of years. The Silmarillion was a bible to me. I saw the Hobbit cartoon many times. Many years later I saw the movies, multiple times (which, unlike many movies I've seen after reading the books, were very good). I decided to listen to the Audible recording and I am glad I did. The narrator does an amazing job with dialogue and song. Excellent. The recording is very faithful to the printed version.
I don't know why some people have complained about a very minor blip here and there. Only someone who is very anal would notice something so minute. This is a wonderful series read by a wonderful narrator.
Poe is the father of the modern detective story. Tolkien is the father of modern fantasy. Hemingway, Poe, Vonnegut, Doyle, Tolkien, etc. Tolkien certainly belongs in the literary masters category. He is the mark to which all other writers of high fantasy aspire (and most fall far short) and he did it without writing books containing foul language or sex. Let's see George R. R. (Porn) Martin do that!
I can actually sit with my children, for some good quality family time, and listen to LotR without feeling overwhelming embarrassment at the foul content. And thoroughly enjoy ourselves while having something fun to talk about afterwards.
Well worth a credit.

Tension that Ramps Up

This tale has lits of action and a growing tension that ramps up amidst tales of valor and honor. It is more than just a tale of fantasy. It is a bold adventure that cannot help but inspire.

I managed to finish

I think I might feel differently about this book if I'd read it before I'd seen the movie. The book is different enough from the movie that it still has some interest, but Tolkien really needed an editor to help him slash this story. There are definitely times in the story that I find myself just pushing through so that I can get to the end. That said, I'm still planning to listen through the third book. I'm glad it's audio and I can listen while I work. I don't think I could manage to find enough sit down hours that I'd be willing to spend reading this book.

captivating

very compelling fast paced story, it takes time for your ears to adjust to the manner of speech. once they are trained it's so easy to get enthralled in the story. the reader changes voices for each character and creates a nice dramatized version of the story.

This story brings you on the journey

The reader does an excellent job at portraying the characters, and even sings the songs which he does very well, and the story is so in depth with the characters and the land and environments around them, and the history that the writer added to his story makes it very enjoyable.

classic trilogy

this trilogy is a must read. It sets the standard for all fantasy with wizards and elven folk. Love to re-read these every so often. The audible version delivers a great experience.
