Publisher's summary

Probably the most shocking of the Brontës' novels, this novel had an instant and phenomenal success and is widely considered to be one of the first sustained feminist novels. A mysterious widow, Mrs. Helen Graham, arrives at Wildfell Hall, a nearby old mansion. A source of curiosity for the small community, the reticent Helen and her young son Arthur are slowly drawn into the social circles of the village.

Incredible Journey. Poignant Read!

Would you listen to The Tenant of Wildfell Hall again? Why?

Yes, to remind myself of the capacity for dignity and courage in difficult situations.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I am moved by the journey and courage of the heroine, Mrs. Graham -- a woman caught in an abusive marriage - that finally finds the courage to free herself and her child through dignity and art.

What about Mary Sarah Agliotta’s performance did you like?

The narrator captured the bittersweet emotions, gut-wrenching tensions and difficult realities of this time through her restrained passion and warmth of tone. She seemed to really understand what the characters were going through.

If you could rename The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, what would you call it?

Have no improvements on the title.

Any additional comments?

This is one of my favorite classic books, though not so well known.

Suspenseful Romance

While I've read much from this era I had never taken the time to read The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I'm glad I chose to listen to the audiobook and thoroughly enjoyed it though at times I almost skipped ahead to see how it would end.

The wicked characters were truly an abomination but the noble characters were an inspiration. I was also thankful to see some characters' reformation and how it positively impacted their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

a deep and beautiful novel

The plot and character development in this book are excellent. The social milieu and atmosphere are beautifully and gracefully evoked. I recommend this book to any reader who has ever enjoyed a novel by any of the brilliant Bronte sisters.

Decent

I'm not as fond of this work as I am of some other Bronte sister's books. But I wanted to have read it. And now I have. The reading was a bit rushed in parts and some of the words were pronounced oddly enough that it was distracting. But overall I am glad to have heard the book.

Great story, mediocre narrator.

The story is wonderful but very much ruined by clumsy narration. Not only does the reader mispronounce many words, but she also reads altogether too quiet and quickly as well as not enunciating well enough to be intelligible.

Wonderful Story

Pretty good narrator but would have preferred a British accent. One of my favorite books as a teenager.

Most entertaining

Liked it. the narrator was engaging. However, some times it was a bit wordy, if one could use the term... :-)

Beautiful in story and telling!

Thoroughly enjoyable masterful storytelling! I am now a Bronte fan. I delighted in this narration and thought the narrator rendered quite a romantic performance as the tale she was narrating! Bravo on all accounts!

Choose a different version

The narrator was hard to hear a lot, and her tone did not match the story sometimes.
