Publisher's summary

Originally published in 1926, The Sun Also Rises is Ernest Hemingway’s first novel and a classic example of his spare but powerful writing style.

A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, the novel introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. In his first great literary masterpiece, Hemingway portrays an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions.

Critic reviews

2007 Audie Award Finalist for Classics

"An absorbing, beautifully and tenderly absurd, heart-breaking narrative....It is a truly gripping story, told in lean, hard athletic prose...magnificent." (The New York Times)

“The ideal companion for troubled times: equal parts Continental escape and serious grappling with the question of what it means to be, and feel, lost.” (The Wall Street Journal)

Hurt was pitch perfect

What a book. Hemingway is sparse but beautiful. Hurt does a wonderful job reading Hemingway's book.

don't know why I haven't read this book sooner. William hurts voices helped to bring the story even more alive.

Casi perfecta

Excellent performance

The storyline is a little poor. Characters shallow, except the narrator. One would expect more from Hemingway. Reading was excellent & made the book very pleasurable.

William Hurt sounds as if he is half asleep. Hard

This is difficult to listen to without slipping into a deep coma. Hurt's monotone delivery takes away from the enjoyment of a great story.

The Light Still Shines

Quintessential Heminway! This novel is as right today as it was at the beginning. William Hurt is a delight. I enjoyed every little short sentence. Time for you to listen to it. No homework this time.

This is the perfect summer listen no matter what else you’re doing.

Hemingway’s picturesque writing is always amazingly good, and I’ve enjoyed listening rather than reading after all these years. Highly recommend. William Hurt’s narration reminded me why he has always been a favorite of mine.

Skip this one…

Skip this one. The only thing that held me to the end was my OCD, and the need to finish books that I start.
