Included on the recording are several shorter works. "The Ainulindale" is a myth of the Creation, and in the "Valaquenta" the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The "Akallabeth" recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Numenor at the end of the Second Age and "Of the Rings of Power" tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings.
Don't miss Volume 2 of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion.

I enjoy reading fantasy, crime and mystery thrillers, as well as historical novels.
I would recommend this to those who want to learn more about the history of Middle Earth before Lord of the Rings this is a masterpiece by J.R.R Tolkien read by Martin Shaw.
The amazing world that Tolkien created and just the sheer scope of it all.
Martin Shaw did a great job of bringing the world of The Silmarillion to life. Reading and listening at the same time made this book easier to follow and understand as I have read this once before and found it hard to read with only the book.
A must for Tolkien fans, especially those who are completionists.
I have read this book more then ones and it is wonderful to have names and things I have no ide how to pronouns. But the one thing I discovered that was a problem was I lacked the family tree and I read the differences of the names but it is some times is hard to hear. Witch leads to my only problem whit this preferments is that the reader is not always concise about names and he dos not have a clear speech.
Terribly boring. I thought this book would give a good background of the LOTR characters, but it was just names being read out one after the other. Only for hardcore Tolkien fans !!
Yes it's difficult to understand at first, but it is an amazing book with stories within it that make LOTR seem like a tea party. If you really liked LOTR you should get this.
"Part One of a Sweeping Saga of Early Middle Earth"
This sweeping saga of the origins of Middle Earth, from its creation to the beginning of the Hobbit.
This first volume Read By Martin Shaw, where his rich voice evokes the mystery and splendour of an age long past, of Elves, Dwarfs and Men with tales of great Dragons and things even worse by far, Of Morgoth, Saurons dark master, Matched against the races of the great Gods of the west.
He makes The Master Story Weaver -Tolkien?s Work breathe and come alive. Where with eyes closed one can hear the whispering trees and gently running streams of the beginning of time in the realm of Middle Earth.
I can?t recommend this Audio book enough, for diehard fans of Tolkien and those who want to know how Middle Earth and Elves came into being.
I agree it can be hard going, but ultimately well worth the effort and then some.
So come on take the plunge and welcome to the world of Tolkien.
For those who appreciate Tolkien's writings, this audiobook version of The Silmarillion compliments and relays the story in a very pleasing way.
"A Classic Tale of Fantasy: going beyond story"
Ageless, Complete, Undeniably legendary (ok that's four, I know!)
The Silmarillion could be compared to a cocktail of Nordic myths and fantasy storytelling.
Martin Shaw's performance cannot be unequalled in terms of his strength and power of voice and tonality. My high school English teacher had once told us John Gielgud's voice had been compared to 'a trumpet through silk'. I'm inclined to say the same about Martin Shaw.
Absolutely. The imagery and plot development is so compelling I often found myself sitting on the sofa once I got home from work, with my coat and shoes still on, listening until the end of a chapter!
Not much more to be said about this fantasy classic from the master storyteller J.R.R. Tolkien...
"one word, EPIC."
The scale of this story is just huge. Makes LOTR seem like a minor incident in the history of middle earth. Thoroughly enjoyable and brilliantly narrated by Martin Shaw (which can't have been easy considering some of the character names and placenames). Love, Hate, War, Treachery, its all here on an epic scale. I definitely recommend this for any LOTR fan.
I couldnt read the book - tried a few times but it didnt work for me. This audio, however, is brilliant. He is a great narrator and Tolkien's great literary work shines. I paid £11.99 for volume 1 from audible which I think is too expensive but that isnt the fault of the audio book. If you love Lord of the Rings you will love this. If you just 'like' Lord of the rings then you may find this a bit too intense. As for me, I am just really grateful that this great work has been made accessible for me. Cheers.
"Not a Novel but brilliant"
Don't get this expecting a novel - you'll be disappointed. It is more like a oral-history, semi-reference resource for many of the events that have happened in the ages of world of Tolkien prior to the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - even the creation of the world and the warring of the gods prior to the existence of any other life. There are only two parts that come close to a fully coherent story and those are the tale of Beren and Luthien and the tale of Hurin and his son Turin (now expanded and published as a novel in its own right). It's fantastic if you're curious about the world beyond The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and even lends a good deal more shades to both. It's just not novelistic in style.
This is an amazing reading of Tolkien's greatest and most fundamental work - an absolute must, and better as an audio book then slogging through on paper.
"Hard listen, but worth it if your an lot fan!"
Historical, interesting, difficult
Probably the very first dealing with creation
Great for understanding the world of middle earth and where it came from, helps put everything in the lord of the rings into context.
Drove up to Scotland with this playing. The scenery makes for an appropriate backdrop.
I tried reading it before but didn't get very far; this is clearly a better format.
