Publisher's summary

The Prairie marks the final chapter in James Fenimore Cooper's great saga of American frontiersman Natty Bumppo. Though nearly 90 in 1804, Bumppo is still competent as a frontiersman and trapper, now on the Great Plains. Once more he is drawn into conflict with society in the form of an emigrant party led by the surly Ishmael Bush and his miscreant brother-in-law, Abiram White. And once again this great man of nature is called upon to exhibit his courage and resourcefulness to rescue the innocent.

Critic reviews

"We still read Cooper today because he was the first of our authors to seize upon the dramatic possibilities of that unfallen western world that stands at the beginning of our national life." (J. W. Ward)

Can't mess with a classic

Cooper recycles his characters in a finale that brings our hero to a noble end. Despite being surrounded by greed and evil, Natty Bumpo strong sense of honor and right win the day. From his earliest days as an DeerSlayer, Natty sees the birth and expansion of nation that pushes him and his way of life further and further westward. If you loved, Last Mohicans, you have to read the entire Leatherstocking series.

Read just a little fast

Good story. Sad to have the series come to an end. I enjoyed reading the series in chronological order rather than the order written.

Amazing chronicle of a long journey’s end

Thank you JFC for an amazing story. While parts of it might be justly lacking in sensitivities to cultural differences which deserve to be respected, it is nonetheless a wonderfully grand telling of a a story of discovery and understanding.

RIP National Bumpo

I’m sorry to have come to the end of your journey.

Great end to the series

Loved this last book. It makes me want to listen to the series again. I read in the comments that the narrator spoke to fast and to slow down the speed to about 8 or 8.5. it worked wonderfully.

Great book, lousy narrator

Mr. Waterman's voice has the timbre of a kazoo and he speaks much too fast

Prairie

Narrator reads too quickly, makes it difficult to understand at times. Excellent story, but the narrator made listening tedious.

Weird recording speed but correctable.

Play this book at .85 speed and it sounds great. sorry to hear the old Trapper go after 5 books.

Good Conclusion to Series

I’ve read the entire series and this provides a fitting conclusion. Worth a listen, especially if you’ve already read the others in the series.

Great Story, Narrator needs help

This is a great story, though not quite as good as the earlier Leatherstocking Tales. The problem is the narrator. First, he seems to be in an incredible hurry. I get nervous just listening to him. He reads at a very fast rate. Second, there is a good deal of ambient noise including the narrators snorting and slurping. Likely this is caused by the rapidity with which he reads.
Other than that, he has a fine voice with good inflections and interest. He jsut needs to slow down.
