Publisher's summary

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Written in 1952, this hugely successful novella confirmed Hemingway's power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Effective narration of a great little novel

I read this book 25 years ago and cited it in a college paper about perseverence. It was a treat to experience this story again. I was moved by the narrators reading. He read it in such a way that was able to lay my emotional response on the story without being overpowered his. Even so his reading was rich and deep.

A classic enhanced by D. Sutherland's narration

A classic enhanced by D. Sutherland's narration... Even if you read this in High School, it is definitely worth re-listening to it because 1) it's a classic and 2) Sutherland enhances the story with his narration. This is definitely on my MUST READ list and on my CLASSIC list.

What tale of courage and dignity appreciation

Never thought so engaging and exciting story can be told of a man’s mind, self-talking.
This is an amazing manifestation of courage and appreciation to one’s dignity, even if it is a fish, that one feels sorry for a dignified fish to be eaten by simply any human.
