Editorial reviews

Patrick Tull's performance of The Moonstone is a nail-biting listening event. Tull's rich and dynamic voice keeps the audience engaged in this Victorian mystery. The story follows the Verinder family as they investigate the theft of a yellow diamond. Before belonging to the family, the jewel is said to have been resting on the forehead of an Indian idol. Is its disappearance a result of a legendary curse?

The Moonstone is a classic in the genre of detective fiction. With a remarkable story and memorable cast of characters, mystery lovers will be delighted by this audiobook.

Publisher's summary

No, the "Moonstone" isn't a celestial relic, it's a gigantic yellow diamond of unearthly beauty that was given to Rachel Verinder as a present on her 18th birthday - and stolen that very night! Betteredge, one of the most beloved butlers in English literature, is the focus of this seminal detective novel, which examines how one family's life is turned upside-down by the theft. And find out why the answers to all of life's problems can be found in the pages of Robinson Crusoe.

Excellent narration and story!

The story and narration are both excellent. Wilkie Collins put in quite a twist as to who the culprit is. He did go into extreme details at times, which could be frustrating when I wanted to find out what had happened. However, the details do add to the stories, so relax and enjoy them- especially those from Betteredge. All of the narration was exceptional, though that of Betteredge, performed by Patrick Tull, was especially enjoyable. Davina Porter was excellent also, as always. Her character was not so likable, however, as was intended by the author. Collins’ writing did demonstrate one should be aware as to who only appears to be noble and forthright vs those who truly are, once all the facts are known. I must, with some shame, admit I have never read the entirety of Robinson Crusoe. I will make a point to do so. (This statement will make sense once you have read or listened to The Moonstone.)

Victorian Slog Fest

Well this was a long listen. Imagine adding a longer Sherlock Holmes story and Pride and Prejudice together, and you have this book. Good if you’re into that sort of thing.

In desperate need of an editor....

The concept is good. The majority of the performers are good BUT it is at least twice as long as is warranted. Due to the length it is tedious

Great Story, Well Read

Anything Patrick Tull reads is worth checking out. This is no exception. My only complaint is the annoyance of having American voices read English characters. Accents matter. Don't hesitate to dive into this great story.

Perfect Victorian novel for audio

This book has multiple narrators and each are brilliantly voiced by the cast. Don’t miss the original detective story.

Fascinating

A well-performed and fascinating book. Even though it is written in quite archaic language, I was spellbound. The narrative is told by different people, performed by different speakers an who give a different viewpoint as well as a continuation of the narrative. This makes it more interesting.

Great, but some of the accents were confusing

Would you listen to another book narrated by Patrick Tull?

Without a doubt.

Any additional comments?

I liked the novel and was very impressed with most of the narrators (Betteridge, Clack and Bruff) but the others didn't sound so English to my ears.

classic mystery

A little slow at the onset, but the mystery of the lost stone quickly pulls you in. I would recommend the book to any one who loves mid 19th century novels.

A masterpiece, indeed!

I see know see why this work is so admired by Sayers, Eliot, and Chesterton.

The most boring book ever!

This was the slowest book I have ever listened to. The presentation of the story through a person’s remembrance and dialogue was horrible. The overall plot would have been alright if there was more interaction in the characters rather than just describing the events.
