Story
Set in the turbulent years following the death of Lorenzo de' Medici, George Eliot's fourth novel, Romola, moves the stage from the English countryside of the 19th century to an Italy four centuries before her time. It tells the tale of a young Florentine woman, Romola de' Bardi, and her coming of age through her troubled marriage to the suave and self-absorbed Greek Tito. Slowly Tito's true character begins to unfurl, and his lies and treachery push Romola toward a more spiritual path, where she transcends into a majestic, Madonna-like role.

The Mill on the Floss is one of the great works of English literature. It is perhaps the most autobiographical of all Eliot's novels. The relationship between its heroine, Maggie Tulliver, and her brother, Tom, closely resembles that of George Eliot and her own brother, Isaac. The subject of sibling affection was clearly a deeply poignant one for George Eliot - she also wrote a series of beautiful and evocative sonnets entitled 'Brother and Sister'.

’If life had no love in it, what else was there for Maggie?’ Tragic and moving, The Mill on the Floss is a novel of grand passions and tormented lives. As the rebellious Maggie's fiery spirit and imaginative nature bring her into bitter conflict with her narrow provincial family, most painfully with her beloved brother Tom, their fates are played out on an epic scale. George Eliot drew on her own frustrated rural upbringing to create one of the great novels of childhood, and one of literature's most unforgettable heroines.

Story
Long overshadowed by Jane Eyre, Villette is widely admired as one of Charlotte Bronte's finest works. This story of a young teacher at a girl's school in the city of Villette is a particular challenge for the young reader, for it requires maturity of vision, a fine narrative sense - and a command of French! Mandy Weston, a newcomer to Naxos AudioBooks, tells the story magnificently.

Story
George Eliot's most ambitious novel is a masterly evocation of diverse lives and changing fortunes in a provincial community. Peopling its landscape are Dorothea Brooke, a young idealist whose search for intellectual fulfillment leads her into a disastrous marriage to the pedantic scholar Casaubon; and the charming but tactless Dr Lydgate, whose marriage to the spendthrift beauty Rosamund and pioneering medical methods threaten to undermine his career.

Brought to you by Penguin. Brought up at Dorlcote Mill, Maggie Tulliver worships her brother, Tom, and is desperate to win the approval of her parents, but her passionate, wayward nature and her fierce intelligence bring her into constant conflict with her family. As she reaches adulthood, the clash between their expectations and her desires is painfully played out as she finds herself torn between her relationships with three very different men: her proud and stubborn brother, a close friend who is also the son of her family's worst enemy, and a charismatic but dangerous suitor.

Story
"The Mill on the Floss" is George Eliot’s second novel, and was published in 1860, only a year after her first, "Adam Bede". It centres on the lives of brother and sister Tom and Maggie Tulliver growing up on the river Floss near the town of St. Oggs (a fictionalised version of Gainsborough, in Lincolnshire, England) in the years following the Napoleonic Wars, with both as young adults eventually meeting a tragic end by the Mill which the family holds so dear.

Perfect Voice
A mesmerizing performance of a novel that should be much better known. Maggie Tulliver is as complicated and brilliant as Jane Eyre, and her aunts, the tragicomic Dodson sisters, are incredibly alive in this performance.

Incredible narrator, incredible book
The narrator was incredible, giving such life and emotion to an already stunning book. George Elliot has such insights into the human heart and soul, and her characters are always so well developed and multi-dimensional. This book is no exception.

Beautiful book!
I loved this book! Characters so vividly brought to life! I felt everyone of Magsie's inner struggles with her! The narrator did justice to this work of art.

Beautiful tragic story
SPOILERS
...
Loved everything except for the ending, which felt abrupt and out of keeping with the tone that had been developed. Too severe an end for such a beautiful character as Maggie. But maybe it’s just the optimist in me. If it weren’t for that I would’ve given the story 5 stars.

Maggie Tulliver should be as famous as Ishmael
Another terrific, profound story by George Eliot, featuring one of her greatest characters. Beautifully read and incredibly moving.

Disappointed at ending
Throughout the author has Maggi vascillate between duty to a wonderful hunchback man and her passion for another man. Instead of having Maggi chose & explain the author dodges & has Maggi die. Very disappointing ending which make me not recommend the book.

A dated moral drama
In this story of family struggle, fealty, love, passion and self denial, there is the redeeming quality of much tongue in cheek humor directed at human kind and society. The excellent narration also lead to my overall enjoyment, such that the very dated drama was a pleasant diversion from my usual Audible fare.

Amazing book & performance
Highly recommend this book. It's so cleverly constructed. I'm convinced this is one of my favorite Victorian books so far. The reader really paid tribute to all the characters in various changes in her voice. Excellent!
