Publisher's summary

Simple magic tricks are what a little boy is looking for when he drags his father into a quaint, old shop. The proprietor seems to be a master of illusion - a genius at slight of hand. But, as the son becomes mesmerized, the father feels an icy hand grip his heart.

Magical

This is an amazing little story that has more to tell than its beguiling prose. It's a powerful reminder aimed directly at us adults who have allowed ourselves to lose that magic we used to have when we were kids and which makes everything around us come to life.
There could not be a narrator more fit than the great B.J. Harrison for this treasure tale.

suprising

What did you love best about The Magic Shop?

The story was a refreshing short story. I stumbled upon it by looking for my other 2 favorites by H.G. Wells. I went into the story not really expecting much since the story was very short compared to his other works but I was pleasantly surprised. The story drops you into the mind of a father and an experience with his son. The ending was not what I expected, but then after all I did not expect anything. This is a good story and expresses the mind of H.G. Wells a little bit more.

What about B. J. Harrison’s performance did you like?

The narrator was very good. His expression in his voice are great and he does a very good job in separating out the characters. I will definitely be subscribing to his free story podcast from his website.

I thought I was there.

What an incredible story. The narrator was one of the best I’ve heard. The voices were so real I really felt as if I was standing in the magic shop with him. Maybe it didn’t help that I was driving at 11:30pm on a back country road in the middle of nowhere, but I was genuinely nervous about the man and his little boy. What a great short story read by a great narrator!

Pretty Good

A story of unusual happenings. A little too much of a yarn for my taste.

For fans of the short stories of Neil Gaiman

A great pallet cleanser after something that gets as Dark as The Ocean At The End of the Lane, or Something Melancholy like The Graveyard Book.

A Fun, Quick Listen

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I downloaded this story, but it was (for lack of a better word) cute. As parents, we sometimes forget what it’s like living in a world where everything is magical and not everything can be explained and it’s nice to have a reminder sometimes that the world of imagination is still out there. It’s important to live in it while we can because we never know when we’ll be able to find it again, if ever.

Very “Magical”!! LOL

I’m not sure how I felt about this story. I just finished War of the Worlds and was so impressed that I’ve downloaded several more Wells stories, this is the second one so far. It reminds me of one of the “non-scary”Hitchcock stories. It left me a little uneasy, a little spellbound and a little wowed. Maybe similar to Coraline. I liked it, but I can’t decide if it was sinister or not! I guess you’ll have to decide for yourself! :))
