Publisher's Summary

The Last of the Mohicans is a story of romance and adventure on the American frontier. It is a story of love and loyalty, and of America's coming of age.

While the French and Indians besiege Fort William Henry, Cora and Alice Munro, daughters of the English commander, are on their way to join him. They are accompanied by Major Duncan Heyward, Alice's fiance, and by the treacherous Indian Magua, who secretly serves the French.

Magua plans to betray the party to the Iroquois, and to claim Cora as his squaw, but he is foiled by the scout Hawkeye and his companions, Chingachgook and his son Uncas, who deliver the girls to their father.

After the fall of the fort, the girls are given safe passage by the French, but Magua captures them and they become prisoners of the Indians. To rescue Alice and Cora, Hawkeye and Uncas lead the Mohicans against the Hurons, an action filled with unforeseen consequences for all of them.

    "Dreadful reading."

I keep thinking while listening to this book that Bill Weideman must have failed out of the Academy of Teddy Bear Voices while pursuing a specialization in Bad British Accents. Awful.

    "Distracting Audio - Mediocre story"

As has been noted, the audio is really poor and distracting. It sounds quite similar to the old school Speak and Spell kids toy - very robotic with parts of words clipped. After about 12 hrs into the book I did not notice it as much, but there were many times I nearly stopped listening because it was so distracting.

The novel itself was fine. The author's use of prose is a bit distracting as well. The Scout always seems to transition into lengthy prose during very critical moments when time is of the essence - it just did not seem to fit well.

    "A Classic Tale"

I read this book when I was in high school and thought it was good. That was 50 years ago.
When I heard it read to me in the language in which it was written, it was awful. I did not get much out of this. The prose was so stilted that it seemed like a melodrama.

    Story
"One of America's Great Novels...poor recording"
Where does The Last of the Mohicans rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It took a little while to settle in with this audiobook...but some wonder tales emerged. The audio quality is less than stellar. A poor conversion to digital leaves an unnatural sounding speech and often a "Jumpy and clipped" sound to the presentation.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Loved the Scout

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bill Weideman?

Bill did a fine job...poor audio quality overshadowed his performance

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Audio books are not possible to down in one sitting.
