Publisher's Summary

Dick Young stays in his friend Professor Magnus Lane's house in Cornwall, on the understanding he will be a guinea-pig for a new drug that Magnus has developed. As a result of the experiment he is transported back to fourteenth century Cornwall.

With each 'trip' he becomes more and more involved with medieval intrigue, adultery and murder. Is it merely hallucination; a subconscious escape from his own complicated life, or a real journey into the past? He becomes obsessed with the world he visits, and past and present eventually become inextricably and perilously mixed.

"Too much left out! I miss theUNABRIDGED Version!"

I have gotten the unabridged version from my library (on tape) in the past, it was so much better. The abridged version leaves SOOOOOO much detail out that you miss much of the story and its hard to follow. You are better to hold off until Audible gets the unabridged version.

    "Kept me listening!"

I loved this story when I first read it and was a bit disappointed with the adbridged version, since it really leaves out so much detail.

If this is your first time with this story then you should love it.

But, please Audilble.com, please get the Unabridged version!

    "Excellent!"

After a slightly slow start, I found myself drawn into this audiobook much in the same way that the Dick Young is drawn into what may be a gap in time. An old college friend persuades him to try an experimental drug and he becomes quickly becomes drawn into a medieval mystery from the past. This audiobook is mesmerizing and was particularly enjoyable while making a long holiday car trip.

"Look What They've Done To My Song..."

Rebecca is Daphne Du Maurier's masterpiece but this is one of those little gems you dig in an author's back catologue hoping to find. You would expect a book from the '60's about acid trips and time travel to be goofy and dated but D. Du M brings to it the atmosphere and sense of longing all her books have. Instead of Manderley, it is 14th century Cornwall the main character is helplessly drawn to, and the reader gets pulled in as well. Reading at it's best can be a form of time-travel itself if you think about it. However-- whoever decided to abridge this audiobook should be drawn and quartered. It took all the magic out so it was just flat and confusing. Based on this version, I would never have picked this title as one of my favorite books. I agree with the first reviewer: "Wait for the unabridged version!"

    "Medieval Masterpiece"
Would you consider the audio edition of The House on the Strand to be better than the print version?

It's always fun to hear the spoken word describing the story. I love DuMaurier's books Frenchman's Creek and Rebecca are in a class by themselves. This one is quite different from the others but equally entertaining. It is like you are "there" in the story with the characters.

What other book might you compare The House on the Strand to and why?

LaFollette's books tracing history from Medieval to....

    "Good one!"
    Any additional comments?

I found the start to be a bit slow, but once I got into it I was hooked! I can imagine that the unabridged version must have the added value of making the characters more vivid and complex and would thus engage the reader even more. The narration was excellent. Another must-read for Du Maurier fans like me.

    "Another du Maurier classic."
    Any additional comments?

Is it hallucination or time travel? Du Maurier does not make it easy to discern. What is clear is that it is addicting. Terribly so. I can't believe I hadn't heard of this writer earlier and I am enjoying catching up.

"Wonderful story, but surprised by the recording."

One of Daphne du Maurier's greatest tales, well read by Michael Maloney, but the musical interludes had the effect of interrupting the flow.

"My all time favorite up to this day"

I read this book for the first time when I was just around 20 years old. It is still my favorite and I keep returning to it to read it again although I am now 50 years old. It made such a deep impression, by transporting me back into time through time travel, that it left a kind of longing to go back into the story. For years I have tried to find other stories like this one, but so far without any success. Probably one of its kind? Today I took it of the bookshelf again, it has been a few years since I read it last, so I guess it is time again for another read. Never read any other books from duMaurier. Will have a try and see if she wrote anything else like this beautiful House on the Strand from 1969 (Dutch version).
