Publisher's summary

Like every other hobbit, Bilbo Baggins likes nothing better than a quiet evening in his snug hole in the ground, dining on a sumptuous dinner in front of a fire. But when a wandering wizard captivates him with tales of the unknown, Bilbo becomes restless. Soon he joins the wizard’s band of homeless dwarves in search of giant spiders, savage wolves, and other dangers. Bilbo quickly tires of the quest for adventure and longs for the security of his familiar home. But before he can return to his life of comfort, he must face the greatest threat of all - a treasure-troving dragon named Smaug.

In this fantasy classic, master storyteller J.R.R. Tolkein creates a bewitching world filled with delightful creatures and thrilling dangers. Narrator Rob Inglis will hold listeners of all ages spellbound with his skillful portrayal of hobbits, dwarves, and enchanted beasts.

Critic reviews

"Rob Inglis expertly bridges the gap between the whimsical, childlike aspects of Tolkien's fantasy classic and the hints of darker things to come later in The Lord of the Rings. Though content to enjoy his cozy life, cheerful hobbit Mr. Bilbo Baggins agrees to help his wizard friend Gandalf aid a group of dwarves seeking their lost treasure. As their various adventures ensue, Inglis treats listeners to a tour-de-force performance rich in colorful characterizations and several engaging singing performances. This story should be the unquestionable starting point for those venturing into Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Listeners experience a vocal performance that is in turn charming, gripping, a little scary, and always engaging." (AudioFile magazine)

I Love The Hobbit!

Probably one of the best quests ever and Rob Inglis has a great voice for all the characters. I will say his melodies for the songs leave something to be desired but a really really great recording all the same

Favorite Audio Book

Where does The Hobbit rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Second place next to Jim Dale's Harry Potter reading, but they are very close. I've been listening to audio books sense they were still on casset tapes, and so I've listen to a lot. This is by far one of the best I've ever heard.

What did you like best about this story?

Its a classic. There are so many things to love. Just listen/read it.

Which scene was your favorite?

I love listening to Beyons scene with a mug of hot tea, right before I fall asleep. It's so relaxing. Also, listening to Bilbo be a bad ass with the spiders is pretty cool too.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end, when he comes back so changed for the better. And the opening paragraph. I've memorized Rob's exact way of saying it as I think its perfect.

Any additional comments?

Seriously, this is a classic audio book and book. Rob Inglis is a true artist and you need to hear all of his amazing voices and story painting. Its just incredible.

Very well read

Every person should read this and the ring series by Tolkien. Besides being very entertaining there is a good lesson to mankind held within the pages.
This has been very well read. I grew up hearing the story read by my father and reading many times myself. Rob Inglis has done a wonderful job of bringing the tale to life.
