Publisher's summary

One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, the genius who is resented because he creates purely for the delight of his own work and on no other terms; Gail Wynand, the newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire whose power was bought by sacrificing his ideals to the lowest common denominator of public taste; and Dominique Francon, the devastating beauty whose desperate search for meaning has been twisted, through despair, into a quest to destroy the single object of her desire: Howard Roarke. Dramatic, poetic, and demanding, The Fountainhead remains one of the towering books on the contemporary intellectual scene.

Critic reviews

"Ayn Rand is a writer of great power. She has a subtle and ingenious mind and the capacity of writing brilliantly, beautifully, bitterly." ( New York Times Book Review)

One of the greatest books written.

I recommend that anyone who is interested in learning what life “should” be read this and Atlas Shrugged. Gifted writer and a great mind. It forever changed my life many years ago. I have read the work many times. This is the first time I have listened to it. Put an entirely new feeling to my insights I get each time i read it. Bravo!

Wonderful! A classic for sure! Thought changing!

This book should be read by everyone. It is the best example of individualism and freedom in literature that I have read. It makes you think long after you have read it and maybe it will make you reevaluate your thinking about how you want to live your life.

This is an important book

I feel I did it a disservice listening to it on and off while driving truck.

chapter 18 should be required reading

Chapter 18 of part 3 should be required reading, I could listen to it over and over. The rest of the book is good, too.

Well worth the hours!

Treadmill, walks, cleaning, stationary bike—it all was a pleasant blur I was so immersed in this incredible audio book. Ayn Rand was a visionary. This book is pertinent today, as I suspect it was when written in 1943.

I couldn't stop listening.

This audio book became my obsession for a whole week. I couldn't stop listening to it. The narrator was captivating. This is the first of Rand's books I have ever read or listen to. I recommend it to all.

A=A

To write a review would be contradictory to the premise. So I won't. Spoiler alert.

So Glad I Took The Time

I started my journey through the psyche of Ayn Rand with Atlas Shrugged and didn't think I could possibly enjoy the Fountainhead as much, I did. The theme's of the two are similar but that is where the similarity stops, this is not a variation of Atlas Shrugged. I loved the charachters, the story and the message. It's half as long as AS which is a plus but The Fountainhead is just as engaging and enlightening. Thank you Ayn Rand (wherever you are) for sharing your mind with the world.
